Leopard Gecko Website Question

Might belong here, might not.

It seems that almost every website I go on there are more Leopard Gecko's with the words "SOLD" next to it than available Leopard Gecko's. I am wondering why when someone takes the time to go in and write "SOLD" they just do not remove the gecko that has been sold.

Have a Testimonial's page where people can praise you for your gecko's/service. This way people buying from you can go there to see your reviews, not by sifting through already sold gecko's to gain your trust.

I personally cant stand when I go to look at what someone has for sale and every one I want to inquire about buying I look and see the words "SOLD".

I have dealt with website's and understand people are busy and this is time consuming. But if you are going in to put "SOLD", you can delete it just as easy.

Just my two cents.

Not only does it allow one to see quality but allows others to see what they have produced from that season and from certain pairings. If I see something I like that is sold then I will continue to visit that site to see if they have added one that looks like it. I'd say it may actually do more at getting visitors to come back again. Most breeders, who have websites, will take the ones for sold down when they start adding more geckos to their available page.

Have a "SOLD" page, this way people dont go to the "AVAILABLE" gecko's page and see a ton of "SOLD" gecko's that they cannot buy. To me I think the website is outdated when I see more "SOLD" gecko's than available and quickly navigate elsewhere. If you added a page like this you could seperate the two and people who want to see your past gecko's that you have sold they can do that.

Don't take this as me being nasty, just criticism. This is just what I think, and I know plenty of times I back out of a site if I see this. So this could help some people.

I'll tell you honestly, since I'm one of those people, that I use my website as a place where I can put up my geckos when I have some to sell so I don't have to email people pictures all the time. I do keep the pictures of the "sold" ones up for the reasons mentioned above. I don't particularly advertise my site because it's not an up to the moment thing. Consequently, at this time of the year, when I'm building up inventory for my first show in 3 weeks and not as interested in selling on the web, I don't end up making changes to my site. One suggestion: if you see a site that has some nice geckos and they're all marked "sold", send an email and ask if they have anything because frequently they might.

9 times out of 10 they have something better cooking. Sold geckos let you see what else they may have because the clutchmate is probably a holdback. Breeders are almost always willing to sell the holdback.

I actually love seeing the Sold Leo's...because i can see what has been produced and how many are being sold from a particular breeder, if one of the babies that have sold interests me I email the breeder and say "hey BS067 is gorgeous do you have any available babies simular?"

Or just send a message to the breeder saying what you are looking for, your price range and they will send you some of their availables. Being this was my first year breeding myself, it was CRAZY busy just taking care of all the tubs and babies, and parents...now times that by numerous breeding females...yea updating the site during hatchling season is not always priority! Your best bet from may to Fall is to just email the breeder asking what they got available or what they may have cookin!

I can understand your frustration! I like to leave the geckos that have been ''SOLD" up on my website so prospective buyers can get an idea of what I have and what they can expect to pay. When I do have updates, I delete the geckos that have already been sold, ad new available geckos, and replace the photos of those that haven't sold with more recent pics. However, not all breeders keep their websites up-to-date and it certainly doesn't hurt to contact them inquiring about when they will have more available.

I too am one of "those" people who leaves geckos up that are SOLD. Like everyone else I feel it gives a good perspective of the quality animals you are putting out. I state how many geckos I have available before you click to see what is listed. I am a small breeder and dont produce a constant flow of babies so to me I prefer the look of my site with more geckos on there instead of pictures of 3 geckos for sale (which to me looks less professional).

We could add a SOLD page but the amount of traffic that page will get is far less than the available page. Leaving them there is marketing for yourself as well as displaying your quality and potential. I know it can be frustrating because I have been in your shoes...but once you start selling and managing a website you will see the pro's of leaving them there.

I strongly agree with Marcia about contacting breeders if you see anything you may be interested in. We (as in Enigmatic Geckos) often have some of our best projects and holdbacks we decide to possibly let go, but keep them off of our website and are reluctant to sell them...but if people inquire I become more inclined to part with them. I have a growing collection of RRS het Typhoon stuff but have yet to put them on my site because I just wanna keep them all LOL. If you know what you want and breeders who produce them then contact them and see what all they have that's not listed or inquire about listed geckos you like.

I am also one of "those" people who leaves up pictures of sold animals. Several of the reasons have already been mentioned. In regards to a SOLD page, many times you have a certain number of pages you can get from your hosting service. When you start adding pages beyond that you have to pay extra. I'm sure many of my fellow breeders don't feel like paying more for a page of sold animals just to leave the available pages blank.
Also, for many of us this is not the only thing we do. I also work a full time job in addition to breeding geckos. Updates get done between work and caring for the animals. During breeding season care requires a lot more time. That means even less time to work on the website.
Check with the breeder whose site you are visiting. They may have another location with more animals posted. For instance we have a facebook page. We were able to post all our pics of animals in a couple albums on that page that we were not able to fit on the available pages of our site. We had more bells available than would fit on the page, but not enough snows to fill their page on the website.

I am also one of those people. Having another web page would have cost me a lot more money. It's not worth it. I try to keep some of my nicest sold geckos on my page so people can see what I have produced in the past. I'm pretty sure that you'll see most sellers leave sold geckos on their available pages.
