I must have missed the memo. Apparently it is OK to sell animals that are the product of test breeding. I was under the influence that these particular animals were to, at the least, be adopted out to homes understanding they MUST NOT BE BRED. Recently I was informed they are to be, and I quote:

"I sell them off as babies to wholesalers all over the world and they end up in pet stores. I call it disappearing in the market. because they go to these wholesalers and never to be seen or bred again."

If I'm wrong, someone let me know. Is this really the normal practice? I think some have lost their ethics and morals on the quest for the dollar. Thankfully, I have a job for money. Geckos will always be a passion for me.

I would assume it's OK to sell the products of test breeding as long as you know what the breeding proved out. For example, if you have a gecko that's possible het for Tremper albino and you do a test breed to an albino and after 20 babies none is albino, it seems to me that it's OK to sell the babies as non-albinos. It would be a different story if the breeder still doesn't know the genetics.

I'm referring to breeding to each albino strain and selling all the offspring. So you'd have for example het Tremper poss het bells. I thought the unwritten rule was to not expose the market to double het albinos.

Sorry I misunderstood. It's not a good idea but of course if someone is set on doing it we can talk till we're blue in the face and it won't do much good.

I agree with Aliza. We can disclose everything we know about the genetics of a gecko, and even stupulate it isn't to be bred... but ultimately we have no control over whether that happens or not. There is W-A-Y too much indiscriminate breeding going on these days, and very little accountability. Sad.

I just created an account on this forum, and im happy for joining already. The forum i was on before was very negative. Two of the admins would comment on everyone, and tell them that they shouldn't breed geckos unless they were to produce something that wouldnt affect the gene pool. They would find it pointless to sell a gecko het for something, and put someone down for doing so. It was a very negative atmosphere, and they tried to convince most people to not even think of breeding.

We have people who believe that here, myself included.

I understand the fact that hets arent very good to sell, or any real value, and i agree with it, it just seemed very negative the way they went about it. They also put down people for various things.

Just to be clear about terminology: I think we're talking about geckos het for similar traits like the different albino strains. "Double hets" just means het for 2 traits. That's fine as long as you know what they are. So I have geckos that are het for both Tremper albino and blizzard which isn't a problem as long as the het traits are disclosed.

Yeah, see, they had problems with het anything, from what i recall. If someone was looking to breed a M's Patternless + Tremper Albino, that was pointless because they would just be hets. I dont know, it seemed like they did this to everything anyone ever posted, and im already enjoying this forum more. Its more positive, and a nice community.
