Bell x Tremper...

Arg...Found someone on Facebook purposely breeding a Bell to a Tremper and has produced babies and now trying to sell the babies. Fortunately, he does list them as Bell x Tremper....But after people are trying to educate him, he ends up being a *bleep* about it. *sigh* Just one of those many issues when you mix idiots with animals.

For those of us who are genetically retarded, why should you not cross bells and trempers, out of curiosity?

Because if you cross a Bell albino with a Tremper albino, you get normals since the strains don't mix. But the offspring will be het bell and het tremper. Long story short, it muddies the genetics. Also, supposedly it doesn't produce healthy/viable (depending on what you read) offspring. I can't guarantee this, as it's only what I've read in several places and haven't seen/experienced for myself. But why risk it? If you do end up with an adult normal het tremper het bell, and you want to breed it to either albino, how can you be sure what albino it is? You can't just say "Bell" or "Tremper" albino, as it can still have genetics for either one.

And no worries, not upset at those who simply don't know and end up crossing them. But this guy KNEW and still went through with it and supposedly will continue to do so.

It's my understanding that the offspring will be healthy and viable, just a potential genetic nightmare.

That's what I was thinking, too, Aliza...but in the discussion between others, they brought up the "fact" that the offspring aren't viable offspring. Found a few mentions of the offspring not being healthy on other sites, as well. But honestly, I'd think that they would be just as healthy as any other offspring, but as you said...a "genetic nightmare".

Theres someone here who products bell/tremper albinos and calls them Bubblegums. Theyre super popular. I have one that I came across under weird circumstances...he is truely beautiful. But never to be bred.

So basically as a pet, it will still be a healthy animal, but as a breeder, its just not worth the trouble?

I don't see any reason why offspring from bell x tremper would not be healthy and viable and make great pets. My assumption would be that folks with limited knowledge of genetics may also have limited knowledge of husbandry and their babies may be less healthy than they would be from a breeder that did their homework in all areas.

The problem with people breeding and selling them as pets is that the odds are that some will be bred in the future. There's no guarantee that the animal will stay with the person who purchased it. Many "pet only" geckos end up being bred by people who are out to make some money or by ones who don't know better.

Breeding albino strains together is a huge mess for the gecko community. When the offspring are bred and produce albinos, it's almost impossible to know which strain it is and it will be a poss het for the other strain. People should be working on cleaning up the genetics and not making a bigger mess of them.
