The eight For the first time in more than a decade, a group of tentacled snakes was born at the Smithsonian's National Zoo.
The eight baby snakes, which sport little feelers on their noses, were born Oct. 21 after four years of unsuccessful breeding attempts, the zoo announced Thursday (Nov. 8).

    Heh.

They're already in the pet trade. Not often, compared to something like leos, but they're available from time to time through classified ads and dealer lists. Usually WC, but there are CB tentacled snakes available as well because...

While this is the first time in a long time that the Smithsonian National Zoo has had them reproduce, other zoos and even private individuals have them popping babies all over the place. If I remember correctly, a few years back San Antonio had so many neonates that they couldn't place them with other zoos and made them available to select portions of the public (which isn't completely unheard of anyway, but still indicative of an overabundance of a given species). Before the... unfortunate... sale and closure of Boston Tropical Fish and Reptile (a pet shop) there was a trio up there which was producing babies for a few consecutive years.

Still, very very cool animals and it's always good to see a public institution support educated captive breeding efforts. Although the "they act just like adults!" quote is pretty goofy. Shame that it was likely picked from a longer interview that likely had better representations of the Smithsonian and their staff and more informative statements.
-And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings. Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
