I have been considering making my own leopard gecko website, and have noticed how cool and appealing everyone else's are. I'm wondering if people would share how they made their websites (including programs you may have used) and what costs were involved. Advice would be greatly appreciated, considering I've never made a website before. Thanx.

The costs could be even zero, if you make the website yourself, download the programmes you use illegaly or use free programmes, use a free web hosting and if you don't mind having your own domain or not.

But that's not a good option if you are serious about your business.

Most people that is serious about their business and don't know about web devolopment just hire a web devoloper. I think that the person who made most websites for gecko breeders was Ryan. Also Anthony Caponetto offers web design for reptile breeders.

I'm also a web designer but I'm at my first stages as a proffesional and I don't have too much to show at the moment (I may post some websites I made for my customers when they are finished. At the moment I'm working on three different websites but none of them is completely finished yet).

Well, the price of this varies considerably depending on the situation, but you shouldn't expect a good experienced designer to charge less than 800$ (I'm asking for less since, as I said, I'm at my first stages, but it's not the normal thing).

For someone of your age, probably the best option is to make it yourself. I use Adobe Photoshop for the graphics and EditPlus for the coding. This programme only shows the source code, and not the results, so it isn't the best option for beginners. In my first websites I used MS FrontPage and later Dreamweaver.

About the web hosting, you can find pretty affordable choices out there without having to turn to free web hosting. They usually contain adds in banners and pop ups that will make the visitors want to kill you :p

Getting a domain isn't really necessary, but will help people to remember how to get to your website. Also, many web hosting services offer one domain name for free when you purchase an account. Domains are not very expensive (you can find them for 0.5 $/month).

I hope it helped.

I was self taught on Front Page. After about 3 years of Front Page, I moved to Dreamweaver/Fireworks. I've been using those for about 3 years now. An example of Dreamweaver/Fireworks is www.mkgeckos.com
