Utilizing the SEARCH function and existing threads

I would like to remind folks that there is a SEARCH function on the GeckoForums tool bar to locate existing threads on a particular subject, and ask that you utilize them before starting a new thread. We are starting to see several new threads on the same topics.

Thank you!

I just wanted to bump this as a friendly reminder to all that we have an amazing search function on the forum. There have been many threads started on the same subjects lately so consider utilizing an advanced search to see if you can find what you need before starting a new thread, you'll probably find over 2 years worth of answers that way!

How do you search for exact phrases? For example I was looking for threads regarding "humidity level", but if I type "humidity level" in the search box I get all the threads containing the word "humidity" not "humidity level", and those threads do not answer my question.

I had to start a new thread asking about the proper humidity level for leos, which I'm sure has been asked before.

I have encountered the same issue. I can search for a word easily but if it is a phrase it doesn't work. Any help or explanation for the multi-word search would be greatly appreciated.

To get multiple words together, instead of typing humidity level type "humidity level" in quotations. That way the search knows to put the two words together.

EDIT: I just tried that on search, apparently it doesn't work on this search function, although it works on other searches like Google. Bah.

If you search using show answers by post it will give you the first few lines of every post. I find it's easier to find relevant threads to open that way. Sometimes the answer you need is in only one post of a different thread.

Yup. I'm so used to using Google I tried the "" on this forum but it doesn't work. Also tried the AND word among other things.

I always choose the "Show Posts" option but it doesn't help. What I found to be the perfect method is to use Google.

For example, type this in Google's or your browser's search box (assuming you're not using IE):

"humidity level" site:http://www.geckoforums.net

I've been using this method for a long time but somehow forgot to use it with this forum :D I guess I didn't expect vBulletin's search function to be so lame... I mean, it ain't free after all !

Hate to bump this, but didn't want to start a new thread...

Is search only available when you're logged in? Couldn't find it earlier today...recent change?

The Search link is there but yes, you can only search if you are logged in. It's been that way since the site began. :main_cool3:

Just bumping this up with some screen shots and details for how to do an advanced search that I put together today for another thread - thought it might be helpful to others as well.

Here is how to do a quick advanced search:

(Forgive me if you already knew how to do this, someone mentioned it might be helpful to you to post)

Click on Search in the menu bar - and then select "Advanced Search" from the drop down menu.

Type gutload in the search field box and then to narrow down your search results, click the dropdown arrow next to “Search Entire Posts" and select “Search Titles Only”

Search_2.jpg

Since there is a category specifically related to what you wish to search for, you can further narrow your results by selecting: “Feeding/Feeders” from the Search In Forum(s) list

(If you want to add additional Forums to your search, just hold down the control button and click each one, this will highlight/select all the ones you click)

Search_3.jpg

Once you have selected/highlighted the forum(s) that you want the search results from, click the Search Now button at the bottom of the page

You search returns any thread with the word “gutload” in the title from the "Feeding/Feeders" forum
