1. When you are contradicted do not get on the defense. There are many opinions on here and we must learn to respect them. You can disagree and support your answer but don't expect to just be able to god their minds into believing you. If theres a disagreeing then leave it at that. You both posted what you believe to be right, leave it to the other members or OP to decide, This is of course if the advice wasn't COMPLETE crap or lethal to the animals health, in which case report the post.

I think finally, after reading a long but funny rant I figured out that when certain people that start issues and cause other people to be afraid to post do get contradicted they immediately jump on the defense. From that moment on in their mind (most cases) theyre right. And they will argue that status all day long. With that in mind like said before its best to just state your opinion and not argue with them. Never really thought about it this way before though. By reading that rant I also now picture Russ S as a very intelligent parrot that wears glasses and talks in a funny accent....not sure why I just now noticed it.

I would like a technical improvement:

Everytime I type an answer to a post, I can't see the avatar and personal data of the OP anymore. Why is that? Because sometimes, I want to verify WHILE I'm typing an answer if that person was a child, what his/her REAL name is, not the screen name, or if he/she is from my state, when he/she joined, or what the photo in his/her avatar looks like. Why does this become invisible, whereas I can still see below the field I'm typing in what he/she has typed??? I can see his/her screen name, and that's all. I don't even know if I'm answering to a male or female, while oftentimes, you can tell from the personal data.

Every time, I have to open a second browser window, open up geckoforums again, go to the original post and look at the avatar/personal data of the OP while I'm typing my answer. This is time-consuming, and too many windows are open on the screen.

Don't know what can be done here, but maybe there's a tech-savvy person who can find that out ;)

That's a fault in the vbulletin software and I don't think there is a modification to "fix" it. Every vbulletin board is like that unfortunately. I will check into it though! :main_thumbsup:

So... what is everyone's thoughts on me turning on the Reputation system here? We've done fine without it for 5 1/2 years but if you guys want to use it I have no problem with it.

Make it so RANT posts can't be replied to. Also make a rule so the RANTER cannot single out other members by name. I think it would make it a good place to blow off steam.JMO

Could you explain how it would work and what would qualify as a +1? If someone posts a picture of a gecko and everyone thinks it's "sooo cute", would they get pluses for that?? I'm all for it but only if it's used as a gauge for knowledge and good advice, hopefully it wont be a popularity contest or for who posts the most pictures. Just my thoughts....

Oops, that was actually me that made the post above, not Steve!

*gaaassssssp* Kelli! the TOS!

okok, I'll go to time out for that one. ;)

Constructively?

I wouldn't mind having more messages, either.
And I think Marcia has a good idea on how to keep "cute gecko" from cultivating exaggerated reputation points. A "like" button would be nice, since half the time I hit the "thanks" button, it's for lack of a "like" button.

I think a like button, a thanks button, and a button for smart comments would be good.

There would be a button for:
Thanks
'Cute Geckos'
a like button (for funny comments)
and a button for useful or correct information

You can see the peoples' avatars by right-clicking a tab in your web browser, then clicking 'duplicate', then the back arrow to where the comment was originally posted.

I also think that the layout/format of the main page should be switched to how it used to be. All of the sub-forums used to be listed out instead of all smashed together. It was like
General Discussion
Show Off Your Leos
Morphs and Genetics...
It was easier to read, and you could see the most recent post in each category. It only took a little longer to scroll through.
I think there should be a baby gecko of the month, an adult, a reptile (non-gecko), and a herp (reptile, amphibian, or other animal),
and this should be a sticky.

I second this statement! And also it's a tricky situation because if anyone can give out rep, what if someone is mistaken and gives rep for inaccurate info? It would undermine the purpose. Unless there was some sort of filtering process. I dunno, sounds complicated.

Im against it. It works for some forums but i just dont think it would end well here. Theres enough judgment about "oh your only this age" or "youve only been on here for this amount of time" and of course "ive been doing this for this many years" we dont need "you only have this many points" as an exscuse.

Agreed, and for those not-so-active experienced members, they won't get as much points as others, misleading their knowledge.
