Mmk, so here's my deal.. I'm by no means at all a tech genious.. infact I consider myself rather technologically callenged. But I do love my geckos haha. Right now I have a crappy $130 camera. It's okay for over all photos but I have to say that it takes me several tries before I get the picture to display the animals color as close to accurate as the camra can get it. It washes a lot of the color out or it makes things dark. Also, prob my biggest dilema with this camera is that it can not for the life of it take an eye shot. It just cant. Whatever that micro or macro setting is that you use frthe eyes, it doesnt have it. I really am sick of using this junk. At this stage in my gecko career I feel both myself and my geckos deserve to be taking decent photos! lol Any help with this would be appreciated. I really just dont know a dang thing about cameras and I fear it's starting to have an effect on my business. I have googled how cameras work and all the different settings from dusk till dawn but believe it or not, the articles dont say which setting or whic camera to use on a gecko lol. Thanks for any and all imput!

I use my wifes Camera when she lets me...she is a photographer. We have a Canon 50D, Canon XSi, and a Sony something (nothing fancy but what we use for amusement parks and what not). I am not good at using her camera though because she has so many setting and all that and I dont like messing with them all. Anytime we have good pics its because of her, I just put it on auto to get the job done most the time. The camera is only as good as the persons knowledge using it.

I'll say what no one ever tells people when they're camera shopping - and that's that if you don't know how to shoot in manual a $500 or $2,000 camera isn't going to take any more ground-breaking photos than your current point-and-shoot in auto. So think about how much control you really want to have over your photos and pick your camera from there. Because if you have no intention of learning how to really use a better camera then you're just throwing out hundreds of dollars :)

Personally, I use Canon for everything. I have a 60D and a Rebel XS as my little travel/back-up body, and an assortment of prime and telezoom lenses. I use the telezoom a lot for my chameleons, so I can take extreme close-ups of them but not actually be anywhere near them, which helps to get their most natural, calm colors.

If you want to do pretty much gecko close-ups, you need a camera that has a decent ISO range (the higher the number you can get to the better the photo will be in low light, but with more noise) and then a good lens. I think a great beginner lens would be the Canon 50mm F/1.8, available anywhere for about $110. The F-stop of 1.8 lets in a lot of light (compared to most kit lenses which only open up to 4-4.5ish) and that will help. It has a great depth of field, so you can get those shots of the gecko in focus and everything else beautifully blurred.

Then there are plenty of macro lens attachments for any lens you already have if you still want to get really up close and personal. A macro lens is great but may be much more than you're willing to spend right now. The attachments might be a better choice for you, maybe.

Blimey, looks like I'm resurrecting an old thread...but as I have only just joined, forgive me....I also use a canon 7d, usually have my 24-105 L series lens attached, and also have the 70-200 L series f4, pretty much covers most situations...anyone else?

I'm a very new to photography and just picked up this camera on black Friday the price was right and it had great reviews. Have to say I'm definitely not disappointed with it and love learning on how to improve my pictures
