What price range are you looking at? It will just help narrow down suggestions, especially since your idea of "mid to top range" may be different than ours.

I personally would recommend the Canon Rebel T3 or T3i. Canon makes an excellent line of professional-grade cameras, and I've been satisfied with all three models that I've owned before.

Their lenses are all interchangeable, so it makes for easy upgrading. Other lenses such as Tamron and Sigma will also work on the Canon bodies. A standard lens (15 or 17mm-85mm) will work great for most shots, even close-ups, and it's the lens I use for the majority of my photography.

If you're looking at doing macro shots, a higher end lens is required, but these get up there in price. I have a Sigma lens at 105mm that I use if I want to take eye shots, or scale shots, things like that.

What I would do is start with a camera and the standard lens. Get a feel for how it works and if it can take the type of pictures you want. From there, then I would expand into other lenses.

    Hope this helps.

I second the Cannon Rebel T3i, we have one and love it. I have the 18-55mm lens that is my go to lens for most shots, but need to invest in a macro lens for those eye shots.

Best part for me is that it is pretty simple to operate...I'm not tech savvy at all!
