Feeders are also killed for the protection of the herp. The guy could've seriously injured his snake. Plus, what's all that oil gonna do to the snake's GI tract? Doesn't seem like he cared about any of his animals in this case!

This really is disturbing, but people feed like mice and live rabbits to snakes.

Like OSUgecko said, you really shouldn't feed live. The feeders can attack the herp (like mealworms and crickets can attack geckos).

I agree feeding live to snakes isnt safe and should be a last resort. Crickets and mealies can not attack your geckos, any uneaten ones should be removed because they can stress the gecko and even chew off a toe but they cant attack or harm your gecko while its eating them:main_thumbsup:

A puppy?! Thats sick and he should be feed to a snake and see how it is. I feed my snake only prekilled mice, i felt to bad watching them get squeezed to death and I was afraid they might hurt it. But a puppy...that poor thing it had just started its life...

it also says that he and two 15 year olds watched.
i dont see how anyone could watch that,
im glad the police seized his snake.
some people just dont deserve to own animals.

in America dogs are man's best friend, but you have to think in other countries that dogs are food or tools. why can you feed rats to it but not any other animals? i have heard complaints from rodent lovers about something like this. i have seen, like Jason said, rabbits getting fed like that(except without the oil), and it was disturbing to me. but it is the food chain, and pythons would even eat anything if it was on the loose. i do think it is disgusting though to see that happen to a puppy.

I agree. I'm sure the guy wouldn't have been charged if it was a sewer rat. Heck, I'll go so far as to say that some people wouldn't have minded as much if it was a pit bull puppy, yet would have called for the death penalty if the dog was a golden retriever or pomeranian. Like TWC stated, it's the food chain, and since a 3 week old dog is lower on the chain it's fair game.

Also, some people are saying that this is inhumane, but from what I understand, suffocation is relatively painless. The animal passes out before it dies. I guess some bone can break, but if puppies are like human babies, their bones have yet to completely harden, and can stand up to more pressure before breaking. (that's an assumption..)

That is wrong

In the US it is against the law to feed dogs and cats to snakes. Our society currently accepts rodents as feeders. If I am not mistaken, rabbits fall into the rodent/pest mammal category so it is more accepted. The guy is foolish for not obeying the laws and not purchasing proper feed for his pet.

He is probably the type to give snake owners a bad name, owning an animal just for the sole purpose of watching it kill something. The argument could be made that making the kids watch might even be considered a form of psychological torture.

As far as feeding live goes, the guy is an idiot and dose not have the knowledge to own and care for a snake. I have 15 snakes and they are ALL fed frozen thawed. Someone even gave me a gopher snake they had caught. She laid 12 eggs in barrel that they kept her in until calling me. The clutch was lost, but I fed her very well for about 4 weeks( no prob taking dead as long as it was warm) and then released her on a friends property where field mice were a problem.
