Well, I have been feeling really down in the dumps lately, but my little friend certainly cheers me up when I hang out with him! He is a Vos Eclectus parrot and I think they are one of the most underrated pet parrots out there. I love him and he loves me too! If he is on one of his playstands and I leave the room for a minute he flies down to look for me. I love him soooo much. His name is Birdie.

Here's a couple more pics. He is going through his first molt right now so he looks kinda raggedy. You can see where the new feathers are starting to come in though.

Very beautiful, I love the green colors. I don't have any birds myself but if I ever were to get any I really like love birds.

Oh neat! That's cool we have a bird forum now. (So long as it doesn't become a breeding forum, I suppose... parrots are very overpopulated and being euthanized in shelters, unlike geckos).

Your guy is big! I guess I've only seen the other kind of eclectus. There were a couple that went through the rescue, only one male, though. I hear many good things about them as pets (the males- the females have a bossy 'tude) What a cutie. It looks like maybe that is corn cob bedding on your stand? If it is, that's a serious crop impaction risk that can manifest years later with sudden death and/or long-term problems (infections, failure to thrive, etc. etc.).

I've got a sweet little Quaker named Sylvia- she's a 7 year young rescue I've had ~8 months now. She's a great study buddy, but a lot of work. Thankfully she's not too loud. (I don't mind, but my roommate might really feed my kiddo to the cat instead of joking about it if she was...)

Here's a pic of her from just now- she stole my candy cane and made off with it. Apparently she loves peppermint. I had to chase her flying about to get it back so I could check if it's ok to feed (it is). Green bird, red candy cane- very seasonal, no? :main_laugh:

I just did a Google on Vos Eclectus, and told me there are 3 subspecies of this fantastic parrot. Which is he? Solomon Island, Red-Sided from New Guinea, or the Halmahera from Indonesia?

God I love him Kelli!! Wish I wasn't allergic to birds. I had a great cockatiel and then my allergies(I also developed severe asthma)hit me. Found a home with a woman that was going through a nasty divorce from an abusive husband. She had told me that he had always callled her ugly and that no man would ever want her. She let me keep him for 2 weeks so she could find a place to live, so I taught him to wolf whistle and say "sexy mama" and "woo hoo baby" whenever anyone would walk into the room. She loved it!!! She said she finally found a man who appreciated her. I get to see him for short visits every now and then but I found out she will be moving in a few months to a different state to be with family. I'm gonna miss him.

Eclectus are without a doubt my favorite large psittacine. Great choice in birds, Kelli. I can't wait to meet him!

Yep, that's corn cob bedding but considering he cannot get to the bottom of the tray where the bedding is I would say the risk of impaction is quite minimal.

As far as breeding parrots goes, I don't see how it differs that much from breeding leos or dogs or most other animals for that matter. Do you have any idea how many leopard geckos are produced in the US alone? Do you have any idea how many of those geckos live to adulthood? Do you breed your leopard geckos?

That's a really cute Quaker! They are very cool, mu husband had one years ago. He said his was REALLY loud LOL.

Kelli you are the perfect woman. I love messy haired women who own white boxers, like birds and raise reptiles:main_lipsrsealed:

Great looking bird and I am glad he puts a smile on your face. Birds are a very intelligent decendant of reptiles, they know a good person when they see one :main_thumbsup:

Kellie-He is just beautiful and you can most certainly tell whose bird that "Birdie" is
:main_yes:

I love birds (heck I love all animals) but my having cats has always ruled out having birds

I have a very good friend whose neighbor has a female Eclectus that was a rescue
They are sooooooooooo beautiful !!

I will really enjoy reading the Bird Forum and checking out the pics

:D

PS-I'm sorry to hear that you've been down

Gorgeous Eclectus, Kelli! I just love those guys! Big sweeties, they are! :main_yes: And beautiful! They're really cool, too, because the females are a completely different color (also beautiful!). They're red.

I have 2 smaller noisemakers, Nina, a female Moustached Parakeet, and Jimmy, a male Indian Ringneck. Jimmy's favorite thing to do is to mimick the smoke alarm-Ouch! :main_rolleyes:
