I just wanted to ask if you guys had some beginner information on parakeets.

My mom wanted to get a bird for Christmas and I know parakeets make great beginner pets so I figured, why not get her a pair for Christmas! So I wanted to know of some good place to find information on them as I've got plenty of time to prepare before buying. She has had previous experience with a cockatoo.

Any advice would be great. <3

That is true.

Go to TalkBudgies.com, they have the best information out there about Budgies in general. I would get a hand-tame single bird if you want a bird you can interact with and hold.

I ended up heading over to TalkBudgies. Great info there. <3

I ended up getting her one and she love "her" (not sure yet since she's so young, so we just went with something.) Today was actually the first day the parakeet (Her name is Sunny) flapped up on my mom's shoulder. Sunny is eating well and doing great! I was just sad that the store I for her from kind over clipped her wings, she doesn't have a single long flight feather, but should come back in in a few months so it won't be too bad. :3

Thanks for the input!

Well actually I'm sad to report it died, I'm thinking it was parasites not caught early enough :(

They gave me a gift card, I'm going to try and find a breeder. You'd think I'd of learned from Sparky. Guess not. *face palm*

Awwww, I'm so sorry to hear that :'( Did you happen to get it from a pet store? Birds at most pet shops are usually sick from the get go. Definitely find a reputable breeder!

Yeah it was from a pet store. I really need to learn from past mistakes. I'm going to just find a breeder, it'll just be easier that way.

It was so sad too because my mom had it hop all the way up her arm and sat on her shoulder and nuzzed her neck, then the next morning, the poor bird was dead on the floor of its cage. It just sucks.

It's always hard to lose a pet, for sure, no matter how long you've had it.

My mom is taking it pretty hard, she really liked it. :(

It's why I'm insistent on getting one from a good breeder now, I can't let her go through this again.

For sure! Get a baby, look for signs of a healthy bird and you should be good. So clear eyes and nostrils, slick healthy looking feathers, not lethargic or puffed up, healthy feet (not scaley looking or nails too long), etc.
Ask lots of questions from the breeder too like how they keep their birds, maybe ask to take a look at the conditions their kept in, do not buy from a breeder that sells un-weaned birds because they are usually bad news.
You'll do good. :)

I vaguely remembers participating in a bird show in 4-H a while back and had to go hunting to see if I was crazy...haha. It seems there are several budgie societies around. Their websites look like they should have some info on breeders and links to a few pages. Some of the breeders sites say they ship domestically. There are links to forums like this one about budgies too :)

Best of luck finding a healthy one!
