If you google "vermiculite breeding" I'm sure you'll find the answers to your questions. I use perlite and used ALbey's method (check out his website in the sponsors on top) when I was using egg containers with the eggs buried. I used containers without holes and opened the container every week for air exchange.

I use vermiculite with good sucess.I use 1:1 ration of water and vermiculite.I put a 16 0z deli container on the scale and then tare the scale to read 0.i then put 30 grs of vermiculite in the container.i then spray until my scale reads 60 grs.In other words i put 30 grs of water in it.I mist the vermiculite until I reach 60 grs.I then mix the vermiculite to make sure it is evenly moist.Do not give in to the temptation of adding more water thinking its too dry.I fell into that trap.Do not put holes in the container. You are letting out the humidity if u do that which defeats the purpose.I open the container once a week to allow circulation
