So a little back story on this one... my hubby saved a lil northern brown snake from one of the oil pits they call holding ponds at his work 2 years ago. We brought him to our herp guy and he gave us the 411 on the lil dude and we released him into the multipule flower/veggie gardens around our house for slug control (seeing as how our herp guy told us slugs were like northern brown snake crack).
So jump 2 years forward to today. I'm out mowing the back yard, and we have all kinds of fallen twigs off our sugar maple in the yard. I usually mow these no problem, so I'm goin along and see what I think is another stick in the yard and proceed to mow over it and then realize after I see the black racing stripe that it's our lil northern brown! OMG... I lifted the mower blades to try and miss him but it was too late I scalped him the top left side of his face was demolished. His eye, his scull and part of his left jaw corner . My 14 year old who knows LOT more abut snakes than I do tried to clean him up and see if he could recover but it was no good. He slithered a little bit then went belly up I FEEL SOOOOO BAD! Thie is like the epitomy of living irony. We save him from the oil pits just to run him over 2 years later with the mower. I just can't believe it. He looked soooo good too. He matured really nicely. Looked really well fed, I noticed a HUGE decrease in our slugs this year, he was just about 2 1/2 feet long.
RIP lil dude... I'm sorry
