Ok, My best friends, sister in law has a leo for her daughter. now i have never seen the gecko b4, but i have been trying to get it from her,,pretty much since she got it.. cuz i knew, at some point it was going to become an unwanted pet. & i wanted to take care of it, b4 it developed any health issues... (& b4 i had aqquired my 3rd gecko)

Well now guess what. it has reached the unwanted pet phase. my frined calls me yesterday to tell me. that her sister-in-law wants to get rid of it, because her daughter does not want it anymore. and she doesn't want to take care if it.. that the poor thing hadn't eatin in a while. and acutally ate it's own tail???? Really?!?! like gone. not just dropped off but GONE! which to me suggests more issuses than not just eating in a while! but i am unsure because i have never dealt with anything like that all my geckos eat regularly! & are healthy

Now for the advise part!
Should I really take this gecko.. I don't particulary need anymore! I am very content with my 3 Leos & 1 Beardie, & didn't plan on getting anymore. they get all the attention i can offer. they all get thier "outside, adventure time" if not everyday, at least 3-4 days a week. but with working 2jobs, & having a small child,i'm not home as much as i'd like.. I really feel bad for the poor gecko, but is it wrong to just tell her to take it to the petstore? is is wrong that i don't want to deal with the vet bills, for an animal that is not mine, & is not ill because of my doing?! I love Loes and think they should be happy fat & healthy. and a big part of me wants to take in the poor thing and give it a good home.. but the other part tells me not to.:main_huh:

I'm so consfused. sorry for the long post!! i just don't know what i should do

honestly i wouldnt, i dont know what kind of financial status your in, but vet bills can be killers, and it sounds like you have the perfect amount of animals for your available time frame, you dont want to stretch yorself too much, and end up having to neglect a little bit from your other animals, but the balls in your court.....kyle

Do you think it has a fair chance at survival? Is it bad enough that it won't heal decently? As much as we'd like to, we can't save them all. If it would be a big financial burden I'd say no, right now is just not a good time for most of us. I know you really want to help it, but you'll have to use your best judgment.

you can always take it and try to heal them with out the vets... if it doesnt make it you know it died happier than it would of... thats what i would do... i would take it but not do the vet dance... maybe im just cruel like that? but truth is, it has a greater chance with you than it will them... with or with out a vet... JMO.... you get him to feeling better you can always adopt him out... again JMO :)

Thank You Kyle, Ken and Bill for your responses. You all make very valid points.

Kyle financially it would not be a burden at all. but with the time constraints. that is still a major considering factor.....

Ken, I don't beleive his injuries to be fatal, But i have never had the experience of dealing with a dropped(or eaten) tail. i do believe i had read something that rarely a gecko can die from losing its tail???(i could be making stuff up, in my mind LOL) but i don't know the circumstances that would cause a fatality from this. & sadly i know that we can't save them all. I lost a baby tremper a while ago that just would not thrive, even with vet care :( but you just can't resist the urge to want to try & help

Bill, you make a very good point about adopting him out! once(if) i get him, and make him all healthy & happy again. i hadn't even considered that :)
