Breeding Questions

Hi everyone! So I was thinking of possibly in the future of breeding my leopard geckos. I am not trying to make a profit off of them but more to gain experience and to test breed since I don't know their lineage. My questions is for the male #1 that I have what would be good possible pairings given unknown lineage? I am going to the upcoming reptile expo in my area and wanted to get another female so this would impact my decision.

Male #1 is a 87g high yellow (adult but exact age unknown)
Male #2 (for next season) is a Diablo Blanco (hets unknown and about 5 months) NOT PICTURED
Female #1 is aprox. 42g (not quite breeding size) and is a "bell" albino (aprox. 2.5 years....she was underfed in her previous home and was around 30g when I got her about 2 months ago)

Also I have heard of it being frowned upon to mate albinos with non albinos or is this all just person opinion?

Welcome to GF. =)

If you're going to get new leopard geckos anyways, why not just get a new male and not use the one with unknown background?

If you want to prove him out, you would have to produce a LOT of babies with unknown genetics.

EDIT: Also, I'm not sure if you were planning on breeding your bell female to your DB male, but DB uses tremper albino so this would not be a good pairing.

As for breeding albinos to non albinos, that is fine. Just don't breed one strain of albino to a different strain of albino, IE a bell to a tremper. This is the problem with unknown hets. You may end up with animals that are het for two incompatible strains of albinos, which is very frowned upon.

Are you 100% sure that the bell is actually a bell and not a different kind of albino? Generally, we recommend only breeding geckos that you have a complete genetic background for.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! I am unsure if she is actually a bell albino as the person I got her from couldn't remember what strain she was. The bell came from what people thought she most likely was.

As far as getting another male with known hets etc. I am not planning on having that many permanent leopard geckos and wanted to get just one more as far as permanent leos go.

I know that if I choose to breed that I will have lots of little extra ones but I also haven't come to the conclusion yet as to if I want to breed them in the first place. Either way I will still be getting one more female as I really want a bright colored leo in Orange/Tangerine of the many morphs that come in those colors.

The DB if I do decide to breed would have to wait until next year anyway as he is still very small (only a few months). He was sold to me at the expo but they got him elsewhere and didn't bother to ask about hets so he's unknown too :-\
