I see everyone has pictures of their babies as their avatar. How do I do that?

Go into your user control panel (user cp). Look at the menu options on the left hand side of the screen. In the section marked settings and options you'll see an edit avatar option. Click it. You can either upload pix from your computer or other sites like photobucket, imagenerd etc. Click save and voila... you have yourself an avatar.
