I had the same problem with my Bearded Dragon, Bruce, when I had him in a 55 gallon tank. I moved him to a 40 breeder (so much more room) and I use a 150 Zoo med basking light. I tried Halogen lights and the like but I never could get the temp high enough.

I got my Beardie from a rescue situation where he had never been handled. He did the same thing yours is doing. He'd open his mouth, stick his tongue out, puff out and I swear I heard him hiss a time or two. Anyways, this isn't aggressive behavior. He's just scared and getting defensive.

When you have a proper UVB light D3 does not need to be supplemented. Bearded Dragons should acquire all of their d3 from their UVB light. D3 in the synthetic form is not nearly as beneficial for the animal as natural d3 from the uvb light. So basically, regular calcium is fine. Without a uvb...
