I usually feed my Leo meal worms but add crickets for sport. Since it's hard to control how many crickets I dump into her tank, she can sometimes have 5 or more crickets at a time. Should I still add mealworms for a more balanced diet or let her binge on crickets once in a while?
I recommend slate or "carpet" substrate for easy cleaning. Paper towels are fine for the same reason but I would avoid newspaper because of ink.

One reason they can stop digesting is if it is too cold. They need heat to raise their metabolism enough to digest food . Make sure they have a place in their enclosure that stays between 85 and 90 degrees.
I'm a noob as well, but am raising mealworms (more interesting than sourdough during covid) but buy crickets now and then for "sport" for my Leo. Regarding raising crickets, the juice really isn't worth the squeeze to me. They DO stink and are not hardy.
