What does it mean when an Enigma is marked as 1 Copy? 2 Copy?

I think it means that a 1-copy is when only one of the parents is an Enigma, and a 2-copy is when both parents are Enigmas.

1 Copy, means Heterozygous in Dominant trait animals, So if a [1C]Enigma is bred to a Normal it will result in a 50%Normal/50%[1C]Enigma.
2 Copy, means Homozygous in Dominant trait animals, So if a [2C]Enigma is bred to a Normal it will result in a 100%[1C]Enigma.

Examples.

[1C]Enigma X Normal = 50%Normal/50%[1C]Enigma.

[2C]Enigma X Normal = 100%[1C]Enigma.

[1C]Enigma X [1C]Enigma = 25%Normal/50%[1C]Enigma/[2C]Enigma.

[1C]Enigma X [2C]Enigma = 50%[1C]Enigma/50%[2C]Enigma.

[2C]Enigma X [2C]Enigma = 100%[2C]Enigma.

Although the above is 'technically' textbook correct, in reality it means that each offspring have a copy of genes for each parent... one from the mother and one from the father. With dominant/co-dominant genetic mutations like the Enigma in leopard geckos, if it is bred with a non-Enigma there will be a probability that out of 100 offspring, 50% will be Enigmas. Those offspring would have one copy of the Enigma gene even if only half of them express it (homozygous). If both parents are Enigmas, each offspring would carry 2 copies of that gene... one from each parent. Since there are very few Enigma x Enigma crossings (that people will admit to), we don't think there is a super form. This would be an offspring that expressed BOTH copies of the Enigma gene which is yet to be seen.

let's look at the Genotype of the enigmas...

Enigmas (single copy) have one Enigma gene and one Normal gene (EN)
Enigmas (two copy) have two Enigma genes (EE)

breeding a single copy enigma (EN) to a Normal leo (NN) produces the genotypes EN and NN or half enigma phenotypes and half normal phenotypes.

breeding a two copy enigma (EE) to a Normal leo (NN) produces the genotype EN, or all enigma phenotypes.

breeding a single copy enigma (EN) to another single copy enigma (EN) will produce the genotypes EE, EN, and NN, or 25% 2-copy enigmas, 50% single copy enigmas and 25% normal leos

I understand, but I guess I didn't do a very good job of trying to explain it in layman's terms. I expect that the majority of GF members have little genetics background, or the question would not have been asked, LOL! Sorry if I confused anyone even more than they already were.

because single copy enigmas have a normal gene hidden by the dominant enigma gene, some people are surprised to have a percentage of normal offspring when they breed two enigmas.

a solid grounding in genetics will definitely improve the outcome of any breeding program

I've been told never to breed enigma to enigma. I'm guessing that we don't want to create 2 copy enigmas?

personally, i don't see a problem with it in any way.
there's been no evidence of increased incidence of enigma syndrome with that particular cross so far as i've heard. it might be useful in eliminating enigma syndrome... say you produced an EE genotype (two copy enigma) that didn't show any signs of enigma syndrome. it might produce offspring which, when outcrossed to non-enigmas, that were all enigmas and not expressing enigma syndrome.

Oh I get it now. I had always wondered what the (one copy) (two copy) thing was. In my head its still a tad bit foggy but I think it'll clear up
