how long can an adult leo go without a UTH(i have a lamp) and how long can a juvi go with the lamp? its just a wondering question......


also, what do you guys know about using the dreaded hot rocks on BTS's instead of leos?

It depends on the temp.

I wouldn't use a hot rock for ANY reptile, I've seen many other herps other than leo's burned from them..

I had all my leos (7 of them) on lamps for 2 or 3 years before discovering
UTH's and they did fine. Doing a temp gradient is very tricky with lamps
though. It takes alot of experimentation. Having a seperate rheostat for
the cool side and warm side helps.
Using a UTH is much easier, and tons cheaper! those bloody bulbs are
expensive!! + they are incandescent, so they use alot of energy.

Incandescents are being phased out in my house!

As has been said it depends on the ambient room temperature. As long as the temperature is about 70F you should be ok for a couple of days but not too much longer. Avoid feeding the adults when the heat is too low as they will not be able to digest their meals.

I'm not sure about the juveniles though.

As far as hot rocks go, I've never had one but all the reports I've heard are bad...

My geckos have a lamp as their daytime heat source and a mat to provide night time heat. I favour having a lamp during the day as it provides a more pronounced day/night cycle.

Wouldn't it be possible to get a thermostat and plug the hot rock into it then just turn down the temps?

No, a lot of them have been known to short out and get WAY too hot!

OK for the hot rock...no go there? mom said she isn't putting a light bulb in my skinks cage it will get too hot and she is afraid of the newspaper catching on fire.......she won't get him a bigger tank, and he needs SOME sort of heat!!!!! I can't believe how dumb she is being....we can't use a UTH because his current house is wooden.....i need to find a tank and talk to mom.....i can't stand how she is acting like heat doesn't matter i don't want my first skink to DIE from the COLD!!!!!
