I am planning on getting a 36x18x17 tank and splitting it with glass to house 2 geckos any ideas on how to have fun with it? Also I am wondering if I can make a "lip" so once I split the cage I can have two different lids but itd prob be an odd size lid so possibly is there a way to split the front glass in two and put a strip off wood to appear as if being separated by that but in reality having that one glass separate them that way you can install two sliding front doors instead of a lid or is it two hard or impossible any ideas basically to help make this a fun a eye catching peice

The dimensions you gave are for a 40 gallon tank. The tank in this thread looks more like a 40 gallon tank than a 55 gallon. If you plan on doing it this way, then a tall tank would work better because the tall side becomes the bottom and you can get a larger foot print.

If you lay it front side down, you can possibly fabricate a sliding screen top that would be the new front. We have a simple rack to hold 55's that are front side down, screen facing out as the new front, to house larger snakes.

Ours aren't split, just a regular screen tops with locks are used. A split tank with separate openings will be a challenge, for sure, but there is a way.... I don't know how, never considered doing one. But all kinds of unusual designs can be fabricated with some thought and skill.

without turning the tank on its side....

if you can find some plastic extruded U-channel you could created a 2 lid system. Years ago there use to be tank setup like such. The tank is a normal aquarium, but the top has 2 sliding lids, one left and one right. A center glass brace allows for the U-channel to rest upon and that U-channel matches the plastic lip around the tank. I'll have to visit one of the local mom & pop pet stores. Those tanks have reappeared on the scene. I'll find out the manu and then you could model after it with your tank. Building the lids won't be the hard part. It'll be finding U-channel that'll work.

This sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing a photo.
