One UTH that covers one side of the tank should be fine. The belly temp needs to be around 92 degrees. Nothing on the cool side. No over head heat is needed.

If the two UTH on the right side covers 1/3-1/2 of the total floor space, and gives you a 92 degree belly temp, then it will be fine to leave them. Nope, for two females, 40 gallons is definitely not too big.

Well Ive heard that if you have too big of a tank it can stress them out because they dont feel secure enough, just make sure you put enough hides in there :)
