When you breed two hets Amels, you get 25% Amel, 50% het Amel, and 25% Normal. You can't which ones are het and normal, that is where you get the 66%... it is actully 66.7%

I just call those 66% hets, possible het. amel. Because you don't know which is which if they look like normals, and until you breed them. I don't know who decided to call it 66%.

ok maybe this next question belongs in anther thread, but,

how does recombination work when breeding this sort of trait?

is it definately just "1 gene" so there is not any need to worry about how recombination might affect it?

66% is the statistical probability, that's why an animal may be labeled as a "66% possible het". There are other percentages that can describe the probability of a "possible het" as well, such as a "50% possible het" or a "58.3% possible het". They're all "possible hets" but adding the percentage is just more descriptive (assuming the breeder knows the genetics of the parents).

So a het to het breeding, all the normal-looking offspring could be labeled 50% possible hets? What would be a 66% or a 58.3% het?

If you breed two definite (100%) hets together, the normal-looking offspring would be considered 66% possible hets. If you breed a definite (100%) het to a normal non-het, the offspring would be considered 50% possible hets. You can get a 58.3% possible het by breeding a 50% possible het to a 66.6% possible het.

Cool. Thanks for the explanation.
