A great site for medications!

If you are weary of self-medicating and would rather a veterinarian prescribe medications, then this probably isn't the post for you, but I did find a REALLY helpful website that carried all types of different medications for lizards.

I bought Panacur 10% dewormer from them not knowing if it was going to work. I have a girl that hasn't eaten in a whopping 3 1/2 months. Everything was failing for me because I did a fecal on her by myself, and noticed she had worms, but I can't pay for a vet (would have if it was a real emergency). I bought the dewormer, got to me in less than a week, and I gave the proper doses to her. (the doses and instructions per gram are sent to you in the package, neat!) This gecko, that I had to liquid diet feed for over 3 months, started eating again. She's eaten one superworm a day right now to try and get her stomach back to normal size. This site literally saved a geckos life, and saved me so much money.

Now I'm not saying what I did was 100% ok, but I literally ran out of all options and my last was the vet. I payed 13$ total for the small bottle of Panacur 10%, when I would have spent over 80$ here in Canada for a checkup and prescription. My gecko is now happily eating away, and even started to move a lot more, her eyes were more open, and was a lot more attentive after only one dose.

They have a variety of medications from dewormers, to coccidia killers, to supplements, to respiratory infection meds, all really cheap. I suggest anybody looking to spend very little money on something that works, should definitely check them out. I'm not saying all of their stuff works 100%, but the Panacur is definitely something all gecko owners should have just in case of a worm outbreak.

I just wanted to comment. I don't think it's a big deal when people self medicate with Panacur. Panacur is really safe and very hard to overdose. It's things like Baytril that I caution people about. An overdose of Baytril will easily kill a gecko. It's tricky with reptiles because they are so small, a seemingly negligible amount over the proper dose can be a problem.

I used Baytril but it didn't seem to help, so I was afraid I'd overdose my gecko and stopped. I gave her the smallest dosage I could ( theres an option of one large dose or a couple small doses, i stayed with the small ones for a week) Not sure if the Baytril really did anything, so I just stopped using it. I recently purchased Rept-aid though, which is notorious for being a really good organic medication for all types of lizards, did cost me a huge 50$ though..

Nonetheless! This website is awesome and I recommend it for people that have a lot of babies and get a worm outbreak of some sort, it cures with 2 doses, which is a mere 2 drops pretty much. For babies it would probably be even smaller. It's a great site overall and I'm really happy with how much they've helped my rescue.

It helped a parasite infestation so bad in my female that I found a worm in her poop! With the naked eye! It killed everything and I'm glad she's so much better

Panacur is totally fine with me. Let me explain why I'm iffy on other medication. We'll use Baytril as an example.

Proper dosage of medications like Baytril is not just necessary because of overdose. It's also necessary because giving an animal too little can cause antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. It's like when humans get infections, we're told we must finish the antibiotic course even if we feel better the next day, because not taking the right dose for the right amount of time can cause the bacteria that are better able to survive the medication to survive and reproduce, creating "superbugs". A vet understands the cons of various types of antibiotics. A vet might decide not to give Baytril and give you a different antibiotic because (for example) they may have seen an infection like this one before that did not respond to Baytril but did to another drug.
Also, not every person is very good at calculating proper dosage for the weight of their animal, using proper dilution techniques, or have the skill to dose tiny geckos with an oral syringe. I would caution you on encouraging others to do it, because someone could easily kill their animal when taking that advice.

So in short, I think self-medicating with panacur is totally okay. Very safe. I don't think the average person should be encouraged to use anything else without veterinary guidance. I feel very confident in my ability to calculate dosage and use dilution techniques (heck, I'm working on my chemistry minor), but I would still prefer to use a vet for medications other than panacur because I don't have the medical experience to make the right calls.

Just my two cents, not trying to lecture you. =)

Yeah Baytril was a very lengthy and worrying process, so I just stopped using it. I got something safer that deals with respiratory infections (repti-aid helps with minor-medium URI). My sick gecko isn't showing many signs of an RI anymore so either it worked or she just pulled through it enough to get healthy, either way, Baytril was stressful.

Panacur was a great purchase and was very easy to use :)
