I found an old heat rock at goodwill. It was too hot out in the open (135 degrees!) But it was the cheapest heat source I could find so I decided to use it anyway. I put playsand in the tank, and buried the heat rock in it. Now the floor temp measures 95 degrees. I went with an aquarium just in case there's a fire hazard with the heat rock. The aquarium is then placed on my concrete floor.
I very much hate egg crates, I don't know why. I was looking for an alternative that they could still climb on, but could be washed. So I remembered all these plants I had in my fishtank (I had taken them out in favor of live plants). They're just decorative fake houseplants from the dollar store. And I got them some flowers, they're tropical roaches right?
I can spray them to keep the humidity and don't have to worry about them getting soggy or molding. And I can wash them when they get dirty.
I'm experimenting with food. In the bowl, there's grain free high end dog food, cheap cheap dog food, and cheap cat food. So far, they prefer the high end dog food, then the cat food, then the cheap dog food. The water bowl alternates as a fruit and veggie dish. I also gave them an alfalfa cube, to see if they wanted it. They were chewing on it last night.
So yeah, here's my "pet roach" setup
. I have around a hundred in there, mostly sub-adults, a few adults, a few nymphs.
