A season of firsts

So it has been quite a season for me this year. Got most of my Herp room done, just have to finish the door and window trim, purchase and install the flooring, and some painting. The Gecko racks are built and most of the other animals are settled in their houses.

I received about a dozen adult geckos from a client who wanted out of herp keeping, quite a few awesome animals which were aligned with some of the breeding projects I was already working on. I got some SHTCTB, some Rainwater Amels, SHCTs and some AFTs. Also picked up some Blazing Blizzards and a female Bell to compliment my Bell projects.

Great season this year in terms of hatchlings. Had several firsts including Patternless Rainwaters (which were a surprise), Striped pastel African Fat Tails, and a ton of Rainwaters. They were good to me this year. I had some extremely small hatchlings this year - like 1 gram when they were completely out of the egg. Luckily with some nursing and attention, they are growing like weeds and have caught up with the other geckos. My Fecundity was up from previous years, so I have hopes that next year will be better. My eyelid deformities were corrected this year and everyone was fine and normal (with one exception).

My Salmon Boa project is doing great, with everyone packing on weight and looking awesome. My Sulcattas turned on this year and have practically doulble their weight this year alone - the male is close to 35 lbs and the female is about 25. I just wish my Leopard torts would turn on. They are growing just not as fast as I would like.

The down side to the season was one of my favorite SHTCTs dropped her 2/3 of her tail for no apparent reason. Went to clean her today and discovered it which was a bummer. Also hatched out my first apparent dwarf the other day. Short tail, odd body shape. fused front feet. He/she was really weak but has made it through the night. So we'll see how he does.

Anyway thought I'd share.

Hi Ian, I'm glad to hear things are moving along for you nicely! I'd love to see some pics of your Herp Room!

P.S. I would like to know how you 'corrected' your eyelid deformity issue.

Another shot of the gecko racks. Details are housing for up to 50 adults and 36 hatchlings. Custom control head. Some of the adult racks can be interchanged with underbed boxes to create larger breeding spaces.

I'll post the gecko shots a little later today.

Thanks,

Ian B.

Thanks Marcia. Alot of the turtles and tortoises and the Iguana deserve it, they are all rescues.

Here are the pictures of some of the adults I got this year from a client getting out of geckos:

Wow, lookin' good, Ian! I like the pull-out work surfaces in the racks (that's what those are, right?)

Thanks Ian,

I learned along time ago that I have to make it easy on myself. At any given time, I've got around 90 herps of about 20 or so different species. So I automate as much as I can and am able to handle all the routine chores in about 16 hours spread throughout the week. That way it's still enjoyable for me.
