A week before hatching....

Have you've noticed it double in size a week before?

How many of your eggs have doubled in size a week before hatching, or have you just not noticed it when it happened? An egg is supposed to hatch in about two days or so, and it has yet to become noticeably two times the size....thanks!

Okay, thanks for replying! An egg I have is supposed to hatch tomorrow or in a few more days, so I was naturally curious. Thanks!

We've always noticed our eggs growing gradually at first, and then doubling in size during the last week (or so). I can't remember any of our eggs that haven't blown up significantly before hatching, whether it was a week or a few days before. However, this is our first season, so I'm sure there are eggs that do not get bigger some of the time.

We have a few pics to illustrate this, though:

three_eggs_3-11.jpg

In this picture, the one with the blue mark on the left is two days old and the other two with the black marks are 24 days old. As you can see, there isn't much of a difference between a newly laid egg, and one that's been incubating for a few weeks.

The large egg in this picture is the same egg (the one in the middle) from the picture that was noted above. So as you can see, the eggs don't change much (as compared to a freshly laid egg) until the last week (give or take a few days) prior to hatching. This egg hatched a few hours after this pic was taken.

So far, mine have gotten bigger a few weeks before hatching, but not much bigger right before. I have 2 eggs due to hatch in about 2 weeks and they're huge compared to my other recent eggs.

This is pretty much happening with us also. This is my female's second egg ever laid, so I guess it may not get bigger before.....? Thanks for the great pictures fallen_angel, that's awesome!! (Oh, and this is her first fertile egg...)

I don't know if eggs necessarily get huge hours before hatching, I've just noticed that they grew quite a bit in the last week or so. We had a few that hatched when we weren't expecting them to (the eggs weren't as "blown-up" as others, and they hatched first), so there's definitely a lot of variance as well :)

The past three weeks or so, I've seen the egg get bigger. I noticed it gradually, I guess. Is this what you mean?

Most of ours I have noticed getting larger over a 2-3 week period before hatching. I have had a couple that really didn't look like they got larger at all. One of our biggest hatchlings ( 6 grams) came out of one of the smallest looking eggs and my 2 gram baby came out of a huge looking egg.

It's the 60th day today, I'm checking it every few hours. Shouldn't it hatch in a few days or so? Wow Ruby that must have been pretty cool, big egg, little Leo XD

Hmm, my first 2 leo eggs are on the 25th day now at 89F; I don't see any significant growth yet; they look pretty much the same as day 1...I expect them to hatch sometime next week though.
