Hey guys, I've decided to buy a crested gecko. I found a guy on craigslist who has a tailless one (male, I think) who is $40. I think this might include food, but I'm not sure. I don't have a picture of him so I don't know what he looks like. I like the Cresties with tails better, but he is supposedly tame and you can handle him great. Do you think it would be worth it to buy him, or should I wait to see what is at the KC Expo this weekend? I know that the geckos at the show will probably be untame hatchlings, and I'm really hoping that they won't be hard to tame. Also, how much do they usually run for price wise? I was just curious to see what someone else would do. Thanks!

I would wait until the show. You can find one that you like instead of buying one unseen.
Show prices are usually a little cheaper, mine go anywhere from $20 up to $200 at shows. If you find someone with extra males then that's probably your best shot at a great price.

Also, at shows they were probably packed up the night before so they have been in the deli cups for a while, they may jump around like they're crazy but that doesnt mean they're not tame. Just cramped and stressed from the deli cup.

Why can't you meet this person to look at the gecko? If you look at the gecko, like him, and find him easy to handle, then you can get him for $40. If you don't like him, then you can go to the show and look for a gecko there. If you can buy a gecko from a reputable dealer at the show, then you may end up with a better gecko. On the other hand, sometimes the people at shows are no better than those selling geckos through Craigslist.

If you're going to handle this animal a great deal, you might find a tailless gecko less stressful. I like my little girl, but I worry every time I handle her. They look much better with tails, but if a gecko has already lost its tail, you have one less concern while handling.

I also noticed that you are 17. Are you going to college in a year or so? If so, who's going to take care of the gecko? If you end up keeping the gecko in your dorm room, there will be plenty of opportunities for accidents that could result in loss of a tail. If a family member is keeping this gecko for a few years while you're in college, there's another opportunity for an accident if the family member isn't as good with reptiles.

I don't really have advice for you because I don't know you or your situation. Mostly, I just want to throw out some questions. The answers aren't any of my business, so I'm not asking you to post an answer. Maybe thinking about the questions will help you know what you want.

My boy is tailless and he is a huge BABY. I don't miss him having a tail because it is one less thing to worry about and he is quite handsome without it ( that may be a biased opinion, lol). I would want to look at one before I bought it. I don't think I would ever buy anything site unseen. Good luck finding your new baby.

The cresties start at $70 at the shows I've been to here in Weymouth or up in NH. I'd check out the craigslist one especially if you are also getting supplies from him. He'll need a vet check to make sure he's healthy so don't forget to add that fee into your $40 deal.

IMO cresties look cool either way, though they do have beautiful tails. Tailless ones do tend to be easier to handle since you dont have to worry about it dropping it's tail. Plus out of all my cresties, which isn't many (6) my little tailless is my favorite. At the last expo in Round Rock, Tx they had some nice cresties starting at $25, but i guess the price varies dependin on your area, although i think $40 is also good for a healthy crestie.
