This is the 7th week after I started treating my geckos for pinworms, but I still see pinworm eggs in their feces. I had emailed my vet, this is her reply:
"no parasite drugs are ever 100 % effective - so it is unlikely we will cure the problem- this is not to be worried about as they are not very bad for the geckoes.
I suggest you test the faeces every 3 months and then treat if the eggs are seen. Panacur is pretty safe."
She also recommended a book for me last time, called "Reptile Medicine and Surgery" by Douglas R. Mader; I flipped through the parasitology section and according to the book, "(oxyurids)...they all have direct life cycles, and for the main part, these should be left intact. Many people have tried to eliminate them and have not had great success..." (quote from pg. 358).
I suppose it is not good to keep them on medication for long periods, even if panacur has a very high safety margin. So, what if I'm one of those who has no success in eliminating them (in another month or 2)? Do I need to call stop? Or shall I keep treating until no pinworm eggs are seen?
I feel like I lost a battle, I had been changing their cage lining, washing everything in their cage with bleach + detergent once everyday; and the pins just won't go away!
