It really depends on the python. Some will be more active than others. The one I had for a while was more active than any I ever seen before. Traded it to a coworker for two older break action shotguns though!

My 14 year old has a ball and handles it often. Some days Loki thinks he in the Indianapolis 500 others he just sloths around his neck while he plays video games. A lot of it depends on Loki's state at the time... if he just ate, if he's hungry, or fixin to shed usually plays a lot on his activity when being handled. At night however in his tank he's all over the place.

All snakes are different they all have there own so to speak personalitiy. Some are active, some ball up hints the name.As babies they are generally very shy and just assume ball up as they get older alot tend to become more active during handling.

It does depend a lot on the individual. They are most definitely more relaxed than colubrids (if you want a snake that's always on the run, go for a colubrid! They tend to choose a direction and go!), but I would not call them "slow". They are skittish and like to hide in small spaces, but they are also curious and generally a joy to handle. Out of all the snakes I've kept, ball pythons are by far the best "hang out" snakes; I watch movies and surf the web with my bp's on my shoulders or in my lap. They do explore the immediate area, but eventually find a hiding spot where they will stay.
