A local woman on craigslist is offering a kitten 8 weeks old with a small bag of kitten food for FREE...I told her I was very interested for my daughters but would she mind driving halfway because mapquest said it was 50 minutes drive and with gas the way it is ant my daughter in therapy twice a week gas is a precious commodoty.
she writes back and said yes she could but that it would then be a $50 rehoming fee....ok wtf??? the kitten is FREE!!!!! I can fill my tank for $50 and drive all the way there with using less than a 1/4 a tank....
I would TOTALLY be ok if she'd said 10 even $15...but $50?? Come on now. So needless to say Most likely passing on the kitten... its Cute but not that cute.
I would spend the $50 on shots or spoiling but not if you already said it was free....ok I'm rambling.... but seriously what does everyone else think?

Heres her ad

2 kittens left, 6 weeks old, born on May 21st. 1 male and 1 female botb very loveable. American shorthair grey and black striped. Mother and Father are our cats. Will include a bag a cat food if you give one of these kitty's a new home! FREE FREE FREE to a good home!

Her response

The girl is very cute and loveable. I will have to discuss this with my boyfriend. If we do meet you halfway we would like to collect a $50 rehoming fee. Please let me know.

IF you really want it I'd just say you'll pick it up for free.

Although i'm a commuter and live where it's normal to drive 3 + hours a day /over 50 miles a day after errands.

I told her that was a little steep considering it wouldnt even cost half of that in gas to pick her up. She said that she wouldnt budge on the price so I said ok.
Now granted if she had just asked for 10- $15 it would be no issue but because she wants $50 and to me it left a bad taste in my mouth that its just for profit I wont be looking twice at the kitten. As the saying goes Theres plenty more where that came from...its very sad but its true.

Normally I wouldnt mind the commute, but my daughter has therapy 2 more days this week and I drive 25 miles each day both days so the gas I have is all I have. :main_thumbsdown:

Maybe you and your daughter can go to an animal shelter to get a kitten. It is kitten season and ALOT of kittens are being dropped off at shelters. The kitten may not be free, but you will be saving its life and helping the shelter, which needs the $50 more than the breeder IMO.

Or if you have a local relative with a farm, they usually have free kittens in abundance. As far as the shelter that is fine too, just throwing out ideas.

For the record I'm not a cat person... I'm a dog person... please don't hurt me...

Im thinking of a shelter...We will be looking around.
Im a dog person too, actually despise cats...but the right cat opens my heart. My daughter is autistic and afraid of every animal including her recent pet rat...well shes interested just doesnt want to touch it or let it touch her. Dogs terrify her to no end. but cats dont bother her in the least. she will instantly approach a cat and even touch it! We had a cat before. A BEAUTIFUL Bengal who was awesome. However when I got preg this last time she was spraying right in front of me so I knew she was doing it.
Our Feline behaviorist said it was a hormonal issue and that my preg. hormones were upsetting her. So rather having her deal with 9 months of this to be tortured by a screaming infant we rehomed her to a lady who couldnt have kids....they are still happy together :)

allll that to say this....a cat is the best fit for my daughter. And as far as the rat goes, well shes now my rat...LOL

Sometimes people charge 25-200 dollars for adoption fee because they want to make sure whoever is getting it doesnt just want a free animal, they will spend a few extra bucks for it.

The humane centers around these parts charge that ($50) and more to adopt an animal out...Maybe the lady is wanting to be compensated for her time and gas (and associated costs of driving a vehicle). I know I have alot of things I'd give away for free if someone came and picked them up (doesn't require much of anything on my part, except a big heart), but if someone wanted me to go out of my way, I still might do it for free, but most would consider compensation sensible. Btw, I had two cars ('68 impala and '88 taurus) that would get between 10-14 miles to the gallon. Hers might be a "gas guzzler" or she might not be driving her car at all, could be a friend going out of their way for her. Just never know...

Well, at least you have a pet rat :D
Rats are just small cats with a naked tail :main_laugh:

If you are getting the cat as a therapy animal you may be able to talk to your daughters doctor and the shelter's director to see about getting a reduced fee adoption. I know that my shelter tries to help people as much as possible. They could even help with the cost of spaying your new cat.

The Idea was for it to be a therapy cat. One of her sensory inputs is hair....She runs up to scrangers and caresses their leg an arm hair...quite embarrasing but being that shes ok with cats and WILL touch them I was thinking it would be a proper output for her sensory.

I hadnt even thought about talking to people and letting them know that...LOL
