I was accidentally sent 500 baby crickets with my new order of feeders... LOL! I didn't have anywhere to put them so they're living in a 32 quart Sterilite for now...

Any suggestions on how to grow them out?

BTW that's Cody's Pro Gutload... They went right for it as soon as they crawled out of their shipping box!

Just leave them with enough ventilation / food and they grow like mad... I had one baby cricket that my leo failed to catch... about 2 weeks later I found a big cricket in there =) I was too lazy to get it out since I cant seem to find it either!

i keep some occasionally as well.. They love Cody's gut load!

As they get larger you can just switch to a larger/taller sterlite tub.. I use a 55q i think...

They'll stink to high heaven; aren't you excited! LOL

i picked up a "dozen" today to see how Leo liked them... i think i'll concentrate on mealworms. crickets is the devil. first i just put a few in the cricket rock feeder thing and shook them up with vitamins. the only endearing quality i could see was the fact that they looked like little ghost crickets when they got out into the tank and he gobbled them up once i coaxed him out of his humid hide. i got well over 12, so rather than dealing with chirping and escapees i just squished about 7 of them. two escaped but i tracked them down and squished them for their insolence. the rest went into the cricket rock except the few that i had tossed in without dusting. he seems to have lost interest now and retreated to the safety of his humid hide while the evil crickets have free reign for another few minutes until they meet the paper towel of death. i hate them.

oh yea, that is one of the worst smells out there, i hate cricket smell. then somehow they all escape even though you have all places tightly sealed. then you wake up at 4 in the morning trying to find that darn cricket that wont shut up in your room. or the ones that have been hiding in the bonsai tree for months making all that noise and getting very fat, and black. yuk!

The smell is bad, but it's the "chirping" that never seems to stop. Don't they ever sleep??? Crickets have fallen to the rare meal at our house now. Long live the mealie!!!

You're dealing with two types of crickets then. The pet trade sells brown crickets. In the wild you find black crickets...the bigger fatter cousin of the brown cricket. The ones in your bansai tree probably came from outside. Aren't you lucky?

Yikes! I can definitely live withOUT the crickets...stinky little buggers! I do have one thing going for me, though. When we have had them in the house, I don't worry about the 'late night chirpers' much. We have 6 cats. It makes for good escapee control. :main_laugh: And the cats think it's great fun! lol
