Baby Gecko - When to Change to Sand?

Hello all.

My Leopard Gecko, Spock, is about 5 months old now. I'm currently just using toilet paper to lay out on the bottom of the cage, as recommended.

I'm wondering when I should change to using a different substrate? Also helpful would be what particular type of substrate to get.

Thank you!

Don't ever change to sand. Loose substrate can cause impaction if ingested. If you want to switch off if toilet paper you can use paper towels, tile, shelf lining, newspaper, or repti carpet. I personally use paper towel but will we switching to shelf lining soon. You can change the substrate whenever you want

Switching to sand is discouraged, as Phoenix mentioned above. However, some have kept geckos on sand without issues. If you decide to do so, feed from a dish to prevent your gecko from ingesting sand as it catches its prey.

I use repti carpet just because I can throw it in the washer. Never switch to sand... Or any kind of loose substrate for that matter. It's not worth losing your little buddy to impaction
