Bad tempered gecko

I've been messing around with the idea of breeding geckos for a while. Starting to think about it more an more lately. I have a gorgeous male blizzard that I would love to breed as I'm sure he'd have lovely offspring. Only problem is he has a horrible horrible temperament. He was a nice baby that loved to be held but as he got older he just got plain awful. Despite attempts to tame him he is just as bad as ever and hisses and screams at everyone and runs around his tank like crazy the second anyone comes into the room that isn't me. He doesn't bite me because I've learned how to avoid his attacks well and I don't let anyone else touch him as his personality is so awful. He is calmer around me and he allows me to hold him sometimes. He gets very defensive the second someone opens the tank lid by laying flat on the ground and waving his tail. He is under no stress that I would know of. He has the same environment as my other well behaved geckos and his tank is in the same room. He also has a weird habit where he sometimes twitches unnaturally when he is touched.

My question is if he is breeding material. I've heard that blizzards are known to have bad personalities. I know that many other animal species breeders will not breed animals with bad temperament. As gorgeous as he is, I will not breed him if this personality can be passed on. Just wondering what you guys think.

Its interesting that you say that, because I think temperament is somewhat genetic. But thats just a theory, its never been proven that Temperament is genetic. And in my experience with Blizzards, I`ve only ever had problems with my male Blizzards and Blazings. But to be honest I think if you breed him, I am very confident in saying that his temperament most likely won't get passed on.

That sounds good. As much as I love him, I certainly don't want very many more geckos that act so horrid.

ZOMG you're gonna try and breed that monster? Haha, I love you and all your geckos, even him because I can't hate a little animal, but... He wants to kill me. I could see it in his creepy little eyes.

If you're ever back in the States in the next few years, I REALLY wanna get a male mack snow. I'd lend him to you if you were still interested in breeding. But no, don't breed that dude. I'm sure he's a good person inside... :main_rolleyes: ...But no.

Then again, I do think it's a man thing. If you incubate them at female temperatures, you might get sweeter geckos. You could try it and see what happens, but don't expect an army of little angels. ;)

My "monster" is pretty though and there's nothing wrong with him that I know of other than his personality. And at least he doesn't pee on me. As long as his personality isn't able to be passed on, I don't think it's a bad thing to breed him. He's certainly expressed interest in being bred due to the near mating incident that happened with Yukina while they were sitting on my lap. It's not like he's aggressive to other geckos or anything other than aggressively wanting to mate. Perhaps mating him would relieve his built up anger or something. Perhaps he's just severly sexually frustrated. j/k Either way, he is a pretty little critter and I would love to breed him as long as all his offspring won't be so much of a hellion.

Heehee. Yeah, he's definitely pretty and Yukina's such a sweetheart, it could be a good combo. Their babies would be beautiful. And he's very healthy. I'm biased against him, he hissed at me and went all aggro. :D But I think their babies would be fine. I secretly want you to breed them so I can visit and see the babies... Shh...

I have recently purchased a super hypo carrot tail male. He too seems to have a bad temperament! always squawking and trying to do running jumps off my hand! I have only had him a day or so but he is about 6 months old according to the shop. at the moment I'm leaving it down to him not being used to me but i really hope he doesn't turn into a horror! I too wish too breed my geckos and I am looking forward to hearing in future posts about how you get on if you do decide to breed yours! :)

My most tame gecko, Yukina was a total terror when I got her. Now she's the sweetest thing ever. Rem (the blizzard) was the exact opposite. He was nice and turned nasty for whatever reason. With handling yours may become tame. I'm still working with Rem to tame him but I think that he has some weird ingrained personality or something.

yeah thats what I'm hoping lol! but i've still got my well behaved leos! :) couldn't ask for betters ones really.( well i could but only because I want to start breeding them!) hahaha!
my SHCT is a bit of a handful to say the least. However I left him to his own devices today and did not handle him just so that he was used to his new surroundings. will handle him again tomorrow though to start chilling him out!lol!

They all have their own personalities, some are more pleasant than others. I have a sweet heart, a devil, and an egotistical little thing that thinks he's all that and a bag of chips. Their personalities change too. The fact they have such personalities makes them fun to keep.

haha yes personality is an amazing thing with pets. Mine all certainly have their own. I have the quiet one, the cutie and the fiery one (hence the name ember :p ). I think breeding them will be fun as it will be interesting to see the babies and their personalities. Though like Nigel said, it has not been proven that personality traits are genetic but if we were to breed our bad temperament geckos, we would find out. Possibly keeping some kind of research log which would be really interesting!lol!

Sappho's the sweetest thing, lets everyone handle her, very tolerant of my babying... A lot like Yukina. I'm probably due for an angry gecko, hehe. I'd love to get lucky and have my next one be as sweet as the first, but we'll have to see. If Rem and Yuki have babies, I want one...

why don't you experiment breeding them. stop at the 1st clutch and see how they go 1st lol! but I reckon seeing how each gecko develops as an individual is so fascinating.:)
haha I was due for one I think lol! oh well more of a challenge and more character which is always a funny thing even if they do wish to relieve you of your fingers:main_laugh:

I'm sure I'd think it was adorable if I got a lil' vicious dude. I've been bitten by everything from rats to horses so I'd probably just go 'Ow' and laugh. Rem really is adorable, the way he's always hissing and trying to gnaw our faces off through the glass. His babies would have a lot of spunk. :D

That being said, I wonder what type of babies Rem and Yukina would have. Anyone know what a cross of a Blizzard and Tremper Albino would produce?

Edit: forgot to say he's a Tremper Blazing Blizzard, oops...

It could always be worse. We have a super giant male that I really want to breed. He is an angel to people...loves to be held and does anything and everything to get attention. OMG, you put a female in there and he turns into CUJO!!! We put our giant female in with him ( she was ovulating) and before we could get her out he had taken a huge chunk out of her tail. Come to find out he had killed 2 females when he was with the guy we bought him from. So look on the bright side- you may have a little monster to people but atleast he can still make you beautiful babies, lol.
