Just wondering... I get my crickets from pet stores and I pay a lot compared to what the bait store charges around here. My friend gets his crickets from the bait store for very very cheap.I thought that I had read somewhere not to feed your leos/herps feeders from bait stores, but I cant remember the reason why.
Anyone want to shed some light?

When I did feed my leos crickets I got them from the bait shop too, about 100-150 for $4. I never had any problems. I just don't feed them now because one of my leos won't eat them anymore and they stink. I have read though that some bait store crickets can have pinworms and infect leos. But the bait store I went to didn't raise their own crickets so I would think the supplier selling crickets to the bait shop might be selling them to the petstore too. I don't think there's really any way to be 100% sure unless you raise them yourself and know where they came from.

Bait stores

Crickets raised for bait are not fed or raised to the higher standard of crickets raised as feeders. in fact they can have chemicals in them from how they are raised that are detrimental. Bait is raised for putting on fish hooks not as feeders therefore their health is of no concern nor is shelf life. The same applies to mealies raised as bait.

You can check with your bait store to see who supplies them. We order our crickets online. We find it to be the least expensive. Of course, it also depends on how many you need at one time. If you are only feeding a handful of geckos, then it might not be worth it. Like anything else, you have to shop around.
