Bathroom issues

Hi all,

I'm a little concerned about a change that my little girl has made in her terrarium.

The problem that I'm having is that she used to go to the bathroom on the white tile that is in the back right corner of my terrarium as you can see in this picture.
She has always gone there since the day that I placed her poop on it for the first time.

The past three times that she has gone to the bathroom she has gone behind the large rock structure on the left back corner of the terrarium.

What concerns me is the fact that because she does not go on the tile anymore I can't keep the carpet as clean as I can the tile so I am worried about the sanitary conditions of her terrarium.
Yesterday I attempted to move some of her poop onto the tile to see if she would go back to using the tile and she did not. This morning before I went to work I found that she had gone again behind the rock structure.

The only changes that I have made to her terrarium are that I used very large mealworms for a small amount of time because my pet store was out of the large-size. They finally got some smaller ones in the large size and I went back to using those.
The other change is that for the winter I used a red desert bulb that I left on 24/7 for her to stay warm. A few days ago I changed it back to a very low watt moon light bulb because it was getting warmer now that we are entering spring and summer. Last night I decided to change it back to the red light bulb because she started sleeping completely in her moist wet cool hide and I figured that was because of a major temperature change in the terrarium.

Now a few questions.

How do Leopard geckos remember where they pooped? Do they smell where they have gone or can they see where they have gone?

Does anyone know how I can remedy this problem?

Leos do better with UTH. They need a spot on the floor that is 90 degrees that they can lay their belly on. This is really hard to achieve inside a hide with a light and especially hard with a surface that does not retain warmth like repticarpet. Keeping her cage with air temps around 90 will enable her to digest her food but she will suffer long term. You should also provide a cool hide so she has a place to settle that's not under the lamp. I find many of my geckos prefer to be around 80-85 degrees when they aren't actively digesting food.

I guess i would try switching the carpet, bleaching everything in her cage and starting by moving her poo to the place you want her to use just like you did before. Most of mine stick to a spot once they choose it and I arrange their tank around wherever they choose.

Hi Doc,

I guess I should've stated that I do have an under the tank heater for her in the terrarium.

Also, she does have a cool hide that is on the cold side of her terrarium.

I will go out and buy her a new carpet and I will bleach everything in her cage and clean it really well since it's that time of the month anyway.
I always clean her terrarium once a month. I take everything out bleach it, I wash the tank well.
I'll make it so it was like the first time she came home.

An UTH costs about $10-15. You may also need a dimmer or thermostat ($10-$40 depending on which you choose for a very basic one). Well worth the investment in my opinion :) Good luck getting her to poo where you want!
