I have about 40 beetles or so now probably and when i look in there once a day..2/3 of the beetles are flipped on their backs. They are on ground up oatmeal and have a potato or carrot in there cut in half
odd. i never had a problem on oatmeal. i have about 80, well now 79, found one beetle casualty upside down in a corner. only time ive seen them upside down
In the first photo it contains approximately 8,000 beetles, and a total of about 8,000 to 10,000 worms of various sizes, and no idea of the number of eggs. They live very reproductive in the orange atmosphere and no big problem with smell. (mix consists of Layer hen crumbles, calcium, carrots, some orange but mostly peels, I will either feed large meal worms from this bin.....or sometimes I pull the large ones out and start a new bin. And in photo 2 you will see beetles on the underside of an orange peel. When I put the peel back in the bin they will be upside down........Not a problem...Throw something on them and they will set their feet in place. Orange peel, your oats (cover them up with the oats and they will grab on to it........they probably spend a large part of their life upside down. They will gather in groups on the back sides of the peel. The groups of worms will also gather under the peal. Very easy to raise this way and also to get a bucket of worms to feed anytime you need them........It was not the first or second method I tried..It is the best,
AT LEAST FOR ME........Take Care. HJ
ok i will throw some stuff on them and put some other stuff in there..i just never heard of this problem on the computer and stuff and then i had to spend 2 min. flipping each beetle back over
If you don't want to do a picky, picky......... "the larger worms will get in the pockets of a egg carton that is set on top of your bedding material"........turn it over and harvest. The only reason I do not do this anymore is the worms eat the paper material.....I'm not sure that will bother the gecko at all, but I don't chance it anymore. They will also gather in a orange skin that is face down in the mix.....not quite as well as the egg carton though....take care / HJ
So the trick to keeping the beetles up is have tons of places to get moisture? how long do the orange peels ast for? also do you put the outer edge of the orange peel down or up?
Hey David.... you got it. The peel lasts forever, don't worry when it is dried out. They still use it to gather under ( both worms and beetles) ***Turn the fruit side(if only the peel) down with the peel up..***If you are supplying like a 1/2 of an orange, place it fruit side up.(less chance of mold)... .Add a little of the ingredients when necessary.
Its a great way to raise them..(**Process Patent Pending**).
Don't worry about separating the life stages. I have that one pictured 12 qt. container that has the "colony" (or whatever) + I have another 12 qt with probably 6,000 little meal worms only in it. I clean out and start a new batch ?? whenever the crumbles are real dark and deep...thats the lower level that consists of the leftovers from the crumbles, carrots, oranges.....if you feel like you want to "clean it up a little" but not change things over. Remove some of the really old orange skins and hold a vacuum hose end high enough to only pull out the light weight meal worm skins.....Ta-Daaaaa done. maybe add a little new mix. Take care. / HJ
I have the same problem David...so you are not alone! These beetles just dont seem to be the brightest bunch do they? lol I have toliet paper / paper towel rolls in there with apples/carrots. Im not sure if my colony will ever take off though because my beetles seem to die after only a day or two. *sighhhh*
