Great article (I'm Paul BTW, talked to you via email about Japan). As I said in the comments, I'd really like to get a snake in 2013 so I'm reading all I can about the subject :)

Much appreciated, Paul. Nice to hear from you. I can send detailed care info on any you are considering when you're ready. A happy and healthy season and new year to you and yours. Frank

There are certainly a lot of beautiful morphs. How calm are they during handling?
I've never heard of an aggressive corn. They're generally very docile, even if they're not really handled. I know many people that almost never handle theirs, but when they do, it's no issue. We had one years ago that I only handled once every month or so, and she was still very docile.

Can't speak for the others but I had a couple corns and they were docile, pretty colors, and cool to watch constrict their meals but overall I found them a bit boring (sorry!). Also had a garter snake and he was cool to feed goldfish to! I've had a couple western hog nose snakes for about a half year now and they are by far my favorites. They're docile but curious and out and about all the time. They even hiss at me a bit when they're ready to be done with my handleing them and i hear the babies are comical as they hiss and play dead. i hope to have some babies in the spring and find out!!

I agree with the general opinion of corns and balls be the best beginner snakes. Which you go with depends on what you like. Personally, I find ball pythons to be boring. They are very gentle, easy to handle snakes but boring to me. I never found my cornsnakes to be boring. And speaking of western hognose snakes, I've been considering one of them!

Thanks.,,good choice; young eastern and Westerns do play dead, with mouth open and tongue out...if turned right-side up, they persist in flipping onto their backs once left alone! They tend to lose the habit rather quickly in captivity. Good luck breeding, pl keep me posted, best, Frank

I've heard a lot of good things about hognoses. They appear to be the favourites of everyone who owns them.

I found a beautiful albino King for sale that I'm considering getting. Anyone familiar with them?
