Best Substrate?

What is the absolute best substrate I can get for my Leopard Geckos? Anything other the paper towel.

absolute safest is slate tile at any hardware store. put some papertowel underneath for better heat distribution and your good to go!

Most people are going to say tile. Slate/ceramic/porcelain. Make sure you buy roughish textured ones if you buy ceramic/porcelain so the leos have grip

Thanks for all the help. I got the slate tile. I haven't put it in yet, but it's multi-color, so I think it will look more natural.

i don't mean to hijack this w/ a question of my own, but does the heat go thru the tiles well? most i see are a bit on the thick side. (at least for heat to get thru)

Yes tiles conduct heat very well. Slate sometimes is thicker and heavier, so if it affects your temperature too much you can always go with ceramic tiles.

I see a lot of people say "slate tile" when in actuallity, those are 2 different things.... slate is thick, layered, and rocky where tiled is flat and usually ceramic or porcelain. I have tile in my tank and the heat goes through great...about 95 in her hot spot.

I like the looks of the natural slate. When I bought mine I just opened up a few boxes at lowes and picked out the thin ones for my warm side.

I'm using 1/8" thick porcelain tile and when I first installed the UTH I let it sit and warm up. I think it got up to 100F+ so it conducts heat very well. Just get a thermostat to regulate it

Like some one else sort of mentioned before, you can use paper towels between the glass and tile to insulate. I have never found it necessary to use a thermostat on a tank with a heat pad as long as you check it regularly when the weather changes and insulate accordingly.
