Big male fight...

Made a divider in the cage to separate 2 males. Went out to work that night night at my bar. Got home and both males are on opposite sides of cage from the sides they started on. One side of cage was completely torn up calcium dust poop and shed skin every where. I'm assuming that's where fight started. Some how one got back over and wasn't chased back over. Only problem I see (besides slight wounds)... Is now our wonderful male Zant is scared to death of being picked up. Is there a way we can tame him back to the way he was calm and sweet. The girlfriend and I feel so bad that he got beaten up. Has anyone had something like this happen to them?

Yes, I have. I had once accidently put a male into another male's tank due to my carelessness. I found out only after several minutes and my poor Gel was already all beaten up by Marly. He had 2 serious bites on the neck and Marly just had some scratches on the back. They weren't fighting when I found them, they were already done and separated at opposite ends of the tank. I felt SO guilty, I wish Marly bite me instead! Fortunately, Gel healed after a couple sheds. I didn't even put any ointment on him, just rinsed the area with diluted alcohol, and put him in a dry clean place.

Good luck with yours.

I had the same thing happen once. I woke up to a lot of noise, and all I saw was blood plattered all over the tank. I had to use the water sprayer to separate them. The male that lost the fight got over 20 stitches and lost his rear foot, and his rear leg was broken and flopping around over his back. Thank God no one was killed!

Start my described thread, handling Geckos. as often as you have time.
He will get back to normal, as long as you never carry the scent
over to him. WASH hands with disinfectant each handling.
Here is the link to the thread. Works quickly if followed.
Take care. HJ

Well made divider a little bit better. How ever i know they can still smell one another the sides are not all the way to the glass. Literally that much space (___) one front and back. I know they can stick the tip of there nose in to smell. Notice Zant is still very wide eyes. Is it bad that they can probably smell each other? Am I going to need to get a whole other cage setup? I cant make divider solid wall to wall and top to bottom don't have proper material. One that i have made NOW they cant get past but air does flow back and forth between 2 male cages.

I would think its better for him if he can't sense the other male near by.

Unfortunately the males will kill each other. Also it is good to remember that hatchlings of very different size should not be housed together either. It is possible that the larger one will harm, kill, or eat the smaller one. That can happen regardless of gender. It is hard to imagine that the little sweeties can turn on each other that way, but that is part of their nature.

Be real careful with even that much space, you would be very surprised how small of a space they can squeeze through.....words of experience.

Like I tell people with divided betta tanks, accidents occur and it is just not worth the risk to have a divided tank.

I think you should save yourself alot of worry and just get another tank.

Glad your geckos are alright.

I agree & would get another tank...my thoughts are it wil help him de stress if he doesn't smell, have the males scent so close to him. And I agree w. Kathy- would be very surprised the amount of space they can squeeze through. Also I'd take my time w. him and let him heal 1st, then after he's healed start handling him again, very slowly. 1st they need to feel safe in their homes before they're comfrontable again anywhere else. When I've had a gecko w. open wound I use First Aid Antibiotic/ Pain Relieving Ointment (max strength) Basically off brand of neosporn (I keep the pain relief around the house anyways for us anyways, works great for burns,etc..) but have used this a couple time and just amazed how fast the wounds healed. I also take out any humid hide, dirt, substrate, and have them on just papertowel, hide, water, basically take out anything that could irrate the wounds or get in them. I remember one female that got it bad in the leg once, deepest wound I've had here & this is all I used on her, once a day, w.o touching it just put a glob on her, housed alone, set up was really the same as she had just w.o the humid hide & she was back to usual in no time. Also I wouldn't use any type of alcohol, not even deliuted, it's not neccessary & would just hurt! The antibotic onintment w. keep it free of infection & heal w.o hurting the gecko.
