Bleeding hemipenes

Again, these are not my geckos (why am I always worrying more about other people's animals than the owners themselves? :main_angry: ) so I don't know almost anything about the conditions this poor guy is mantained at. The owner doesn't seem to care too much so asking him would be a waste of time.

Seeing these pics shocked me a lot, if I were the owner that gecko would be at the vet in an instant... Although I think he is from Latin America (at least he speaks like it) and there aren't any vets there that treat exotics...

What can I do? I would like to help this guy... Do you know which treatment should it take so I can tell the owner? What could be the cause of the bleeding? Doesn't look like a prolapse, does it? I've never had that problem (luckily) but the prolapses I've seen in photos didn't seem to cause all that bleeding.

Didnt know a prolapse would bleed that much, but a prolapse can bleed. I just had a prolapsed gecko, took him to the vet and actully found out there are 3 possible types of a prolapse, the hemipene, anal, and what ever the female prolapse was called. That looks pretty serious and needs to be treated by a vet definitely

I am new to all this, so if I am off base let me know...is it possible that it is the female that is bleeding and not the male? Do virgin females bleed the first time they mate? Although, that is alot of blood for such small creatures...

Just curious and I am here to learn as much as I can...

Females dont bleed from their first breeding, but The blood could be from the female if she had a prolapse, which is possible. With all that bleeding you should be able to look at the 2 geckos and see which it is from. If the male prolapsed, more than likely a hemipene will still be sticking out, unless he was able to retract it on his own. I was told by my vet that females usually die from a prolapse, so if it was her, I guess that would also be ovious. Either way that gecko needs to see a vet ASAP

You can reconigze who is the male and the female by the spots. In the second pic is the gecko who was monting the other gecko in the first one who is on a puddle of blood. The female doesn't seem to have blood dropping from her.

I also think that he should see a vet... But what can I suggest him if there aren't any or he doesn't want to see one? Those pics are from some time ago so if he could or was willing to take him to a vet he would have done it already.

People like to make things complicated, don't they...

So Sandra, any idea what has happened to the leos? Did he take them to the vet? How long ago did this happen?

I'm still trying to figure out. I just realized that the first post on that thread is from Febrary 13th... So he has had this problem all this time. In his first post he says:
In the pic you can see the blood stain and in some cases it keeps bleeding even after the copulation

That "in some cases" makes me think that he has tried to breed him more than once after he knew of the bleeding problem, what draws us to the next conclusions:
- It is a cronic problem or he has an injury that hasn't been able to cure between breeding and breeding.
- The owner is an idiot.

In his last post (which is recent, so the gecko is still ill), he says that this male has been removed from the breeding activity and that he has already found out the cause and is under treatment, but nothing else, because he wants me to prove (I don't have to prove anything, but well...) my usefulness in that thread by giving my opinion on what is it. I've asked him to say what caused the bleeding in his opinion and which treatment is he using, but there's no answer yet. I hope he says that it was the vet who made a diagnosis and not him because I seriously wonder about his lack of common sense...

I'll keep you updated about the little guy when I know anything else.

Sandra, I have this problem with one of my males. Dr. Harkewicz diagnosed it as "hemo-ejaculation", or ejaculating blood along with semen during mating. He says it is nothing to worry about. (easier said than done...)

But Marcia, did your male bleed this much? That seems to be an important blood loss for a gecko.

My male just had the same issue. Not nearly as much as blood as the above, but nonetheless some blood. He appears normal. Doing the normal licking thing. I've heard of the hemo-ejaculation too....

Still would like an update on the male in the above if possible. Thanks!

I actually had my het raptor male do the same thing... 3 times... the size of quarter twice than like 2 silver dollars, as well as a little spray..
It was definitely interesting to see happen....

Basically I had a fun talk with Marcia and I decided to put him in with a fresh legal female (after making sure their was no blue bruising or prolapse )..I witnessed them mate 4 times... NO blood..and many eggs from both females..

Yep, it's good to know that it's not a big deal, I would probably freak out if I saw my male gecko bleeding like this without knowing. Interesting information in this thread, indeed.

I don't know any updates on the state of the male in the first post. The owner didn't answer me anymore. I hope he's alright.
