Borrowing a gecko to breed

All right here is my question. I have 2 geckos one of them is my first Leo ever. her name is Fenrir, When I got her I though she was a male. Until I was able to see her sex. She is getting to the point where she's super healthy for breeding. Except she's too young. 5 Months old She's 2.7 oz I want to breed her when shes old enough But I want a good Morph preferably a mack snow or raptor.

To say the true i don't care about what will come out of that. but I cant buy one currently since i am saving for a car and other things. Do you guys think is alright to ask a person, Breeder To let me use one of he's males to mate with mine. I want a good male for her.

That would be a breeding loan. Some people may want to split up the babies from the mating, but if you find a friend who keeps leos, he/she may just let you borrow a male.

Don't forget that ANY newly acquired reptile, even on a breeding loan, should be quarantined for at least 30 days before being exposed to your existing reptiles.

Good luck, especially showing a bearded dragon on your avatar.

Yeah, I don't think ANYBODY will send you their male, especially a high quality one, to stud your female. You could try taking pics of her and asking, but I doubt it. Your better option would be to offer her out to someone needing females to breed to.

I am currently holding two females from someone to breed to one of my very nice males and this worked out because the person had geckos I needed and I have the male they needed. We will be splitting the offspring by half and they will pay shipping for any geckos sent out. I would only recommend doing this with a freind or trusted breeder.

What does his avatar have to do with anything???

Witrh that said, I wouldn't send anyone one of my leos either. Unless I knew and trusted that person in my everyday life...not just on the internet or over the phone

What if the Leo prolapsed in your care. Plus who has extra males to lend out in breeding season?

Agreed, I would even do up to 90 days; regardless of whom I get him from. The issue is some loaners won't let you keep them that long. I would just buck up and buy one when your ready.

You can find a lot of inexpensive males in the classifieds forum. Bottom line I wouldn't take a chance unless I had the funds..

Most people think there isn't enough time in the day.. But all we have in this liffe is time..

If she's not up to the size you want anyway.. just save up until you feel she is ready... You'll find a reasonable stud male out there..

i know it seems a little harsh, but if you cant afford a mack or raptor, you probably dont need to be breeding, because the hatchlings can cost more than that once its all said and done.

i would wait until you can afford one of the morphs you want, hatchling caging setup, and still have funds for vet visits and food and such, and then you should be ready to breed.

when i first bred mine, i thought id do it for fun. it ended up costing me about $450 the first year for a home-made rack system, food, etc, and that was only for a couple of hatchlings.

Zero, you can get a hatchling male Raptor for $350 here and he'd probably be ready to go by the time your girl is ready... Tryin' to be helpful...

Since I posted the link... Did anyone else notice Garrick changed the price of Snow Blizzards from $250 to $400? Hmmm...

Every one of the people who've asked me why their leopard geckos went off feed and their tails got skinny said that there had been some exposure to bearded dragons. Other than that, nothing.

I was told by a well respected beardie breeder down here that they generally carry coccidia as part of their gut flora. Invariably, the people who've contacted me about their skinny-tailed, non feeding geckos (usually when the problem is at a late stage) have handled or even housed their beardies with the geckos. One was a pet shop owner who did birthday parties with different reptiles. From personal experience I would be hesitant to risk lending out an animal to someone who keeps other species that have even the most remote possibility of cross-contamination. That's all.
