Breeding/Education Help Needed.

I am trying to locate some good reliable sources that I can read up on that would help educate me on breeding and how the genetics play out when breeding. I guess my biggest problem is I dont understand how everyone just knows what they all are. I may look into breeding geckos in the future. But I love to educate myself and the more I know the better I can help educate other to enjoy the hobby as well.

Thanks links to great resources that I can read up would be appreciated.

You aren't alone when it comes to confusion on genetics. I admit I suck. A book that helped me some was The Genetics of Herpeticulture.

Great information so far I will get some time in next few days to go thru all of it. I will also see if I can pick up the book on Genetics of Herpeticulture. Thx for all the info so far.

Sorry if I'm Threadjacking here, but where can I find a list of all of the dominant and recessive traits of leopard geckos? Is that too much to ask?

Here’s my list… :D

Dominant

- Enigma
- Ghost
- Gem Snow
- TUG Snow

Co-Dominant / Incomplete Dominant?

- Mack Snow/Super Snow

Recessive

- Bell Albino
- Rainwater Albino
- Tremper Albino
- Blizzard
- Patternless
- Eclipse*

Polygenic a.k.a Line Bred

- Giant*
- Hypo
- High Yellow
- Lavender
- Tangerine
- Xanthic
- Jungle/Stripe/Reverse Stripe/Patternless Stripe
- Emerine/Rainbow Stripe
- Bold Stripe
- Red Stripe
- Lavender Stripe

Eclipse were made by crossing line bred traits so they confuse me… I think there is two separate things at work here… First is obviously the eyes and second is the unique look many have, but not all
“eclipse” eyed stuff has that look… The look I refer to is that of “Abyssinians”…

As far as Giants go, big geckos will produce big offspring… Breed two big geckos together and make bigger geckos…

Back a bit earlier. How would you do Polygenic on a punnet square?

Polygenic traits are the result of line breeding. its like a super hypo x normal is usually going to produce somewhere in the middle. however, this isn't always the case with polygenic traits because it is the cumulative effect of many genes acting together. Polygenic is a category of its own, separate from dominate or recessive.

Okay, so Polygenic or line breeding is breeding two animals that have a certain trait to them. An example would be High-Yellows. Someone bred two Normals that looked to have more yellow in them. Over time you get high yellows, am I right?
