Bubba's vet visit

Ok so today we took Bubba (my bb) to the vet finally! Well I'm worried and I'm not just so happens he had some semi fresh poo in his cage this morn so I took it with me, they did a fecal and it was negative, they checked for impactions none, he checked his mouth and eyes. He didn't rule out parasites for the cause of not eating though.

They gave him a shot of..
Ivermectin and gave me some metronidazole, anyone familar with these? He did say if he has them then it should clear up, but if his need to eat doesn't increase he wants an even fresher fecal to rule out crypto, I kinda ruled that because his poos haven't been runny at all and I thought that was a main symptom.
'm really worried about the crypto thought, I the doc said the chance of him living with it is slim. :( Also told me to give him warm soaks 1-2 times a day.

Let me also add, I've tried slurry on him to and it's a no go without force feeding and I wouldn't want to even that.

With the slurry mix ( i had to use before and unfortunatly didn't save my gecko but it has saved another one. This one was just not savable. between myself and my vet we couldnt get anything good to happen.)

but he refused the slurry mix but I would lightly press a small plastic syringe against his lips and he would open his mouth where id slowly squirt the slurry into his mouth, and he would swallow it from there on out.

Well after the vet visit today and me giving him meds, plus a 15 minute soak I'm giving him a break for the rest of tonight, and tomorrow night I'm going to try him again on the slurry.

Yes I was pretty sure that you would have him housed by himself because he is having problems. but is he in the same room with all the other geckos? crypto is very contagious and could easily infect your entire collection. not trying to scare you but I have heard some horror stories about crypto. I bought two geckos at petco once (well hubby did) and I could not keep them alive. they would not eat for me at all. fecals came back negative so I assume they had crypto after reading that a lot of people were having problems with geckos from petco having crypto. I hope everything turns out ok.

I asked the dr about that and he said that he was 80% sure that it wasn't crypto by everything I had told him, he said that it was only contagious by touching poo or the other geckos exposed to his poo etc. He said he would put him in his tank alone on a bottom shelf away from the other geckos anyways incase they are ovulating and that drive him even more crazy. I knew it was easily caught but only by like one and one contact? At least that is the impression the dr. gave me.

I know nothing about crypto, but I do knwo about the meds he is on. Ivermectin was given because of the parasites. It is routinely used for ear mites in cats, but can be used on pinworms and other internal parasites. Metronidazole is used to relax the stomach if there is any upset stomach. Routinely given because of loose stools or vomiting, but can really be used for any gastrointestinal problem. Just watch to make sure he is having poops since he is on it. Sometimes it can cause constipation. The warm soaks are a really good idea. You can do those as much as you want. They will not hurt Bubba, they can only help. I hope everything turns out ok.

I seriously doubt if he has crypto. The only way he could contract it would be through oral or fecal contamination with another animal that is infected with it. Ivermectin is a very tricky drug to use on Leopard Geckos, so I'm surprized he didn't prescribe Panacur instead. The metronidazole is Flagyl, which treats certain parasites as well as some bacteria.

Disclaimer: I would like to add that my slurry is not intended to be a 'cure' for anything... it's for providing nourishment during the time the geckos are convalescing and to help produce a stool for the vet to examine.

Mandi, how is Bubba doing?
Well there hasn't been a huge change I would have liked to have seen by now, he eats 2-3 mealworms every couple days and I cannot get him take much slurry either. He isn't pooping often since the vet visit he has went 2 times total and I didn't catch them fresh to get another fecal done. He is still on his meds for parasites all though none were found.

I'm sorta at a loss on what to do with him, I mean he doesn't eat alot and isn't very active anymore ya know? I mean he comes out sometimes he is still shedding well. I have been giving him his warm soaks I've done everything right I even called the vet back and he said he didn't think it was crypto when I brought him in and still doesn't think that. It's just some form of anoreixa maybe?

Any advice on the next steps I need to take?

How about his weight? Is he still losing weight or has it stabilised? 2-3 mealworms every couple of days is better than nothing.

I don't have the best scale but his last weight check was 72 grams and he weighed 71 or 72 at the vet I would have to check the paper work to be exactly sure. He still has some fat in his tail it's not totally skinny.

His temps on warm side are between 90-92, I don't have a thermostat yet, I'm using heat pads with a heat gun. I have 3 layers of papertowel down should I remove a layer to maybe raise the temp up? He spends alot of his time in his cold hide, I catch him in the warm hide during the day time hours.

I'm getting heat tape and a thermostat for x-mas along with a big new rack with sterilite tubs.
