Lots of people seem to buy hatchlings, but leos change as they age. So, how do you pick a good leo based on its appearance at, say, 20g? Especially the patterned leos such as bold stripes?

I think it's a balance of who you buy from as well as what you buy. Some breeders are known for their Bolds, Tangs, etc. So if you buy from someone that has a proven history of producing really nice geckos, you're gonna get what you're looking for, regardless if it's 15 grams or 50 grams.

Well at 20 grams they begin to start showing their true colors, but if you really want to know how they will develop then waiting till they are 25-30 should do the trick. Now I think it would be rather hard telling how a hatching would look as an adult. For example mack snows, you wont know how much white will retain or how much spotting it will have, and some morphs change drastically from 20g-30g such as the w/y etc. Well one good way to tell if a hatchling is of good quality is by looking at both parents.
