Hello guys I m a hobbyist of leopard geckos from China. The development of geckos in Europe and North America are no doubt more advenced. Now here all ppl are doing the rearch and talking about combination between several morphs while the ppl in our country are just going with basic morphs. I really want to learn more about the little guy by reading the articles and joining the discuss here.

These days i m just talking about the eclipse gene with my friends. We only konw that it s a recessive morph but have no idea where it comes from and how it comes out. We know that eclipse s unlocked by the APTOR line from RT's website. But mack snow line also show the solid black jet eyes.

So i want to ask all of the friends here -- does the eclipse come from APTOR line or Mack snow line ? By what way the eclipse comes out ?

Thank you all the guys sincerely :p

The true eclipse gene is from ron's Aptor project. It is a recessive gene that causes the eyes to produce excess black pigment, so instead of grey eyes with black lines, they are solid black. Then when the albino gene, which blocks all black pigment, is expressed at the same time the eyes have no pigment, so they are red.

The mack snow gene is a co-dominant trait from Reptiles by Mack. The term co-dominant means that there is a "visible het" stage. A gecko with one copy of the gene will show half of the trait. They hatch out with reduced colors and usually have a cross-shaped or jungly pattern on their backs. Their eyes are normal. Then a homozygous gecko of the mack trait shows the whole trait. All color is gone except for an abundance of black in dotted lines down the body, and black eyes.

Then there is the solid eye blizzard trait. No one can figure it out, it doesnt quite act like a recessive, dominant, co-dominant, or incomplete dominant gene. It just randomly pops up from time to time, and only with blizzards. It looks alot like the Ron Tremper eclipse trait, because blizzards can have solid or snake eyes.

All three traits are on different genes, they just appear similar. Kind of like the three albino traits.

Yes, you are right the Eclipse, comes out of the Aptor or "Patternless Stripe" project. The Super Snow exhibits solid black eyes most of the time, while "Eclipse" can have alot of the "snake eyes"(half or partially solid).

Eclipse/Raptor, and Super Snow are not related, though.

Blizzards sometimes half solid or solid eyes, but they are not the same as the "Eclipse" either. They should be called black-eyed Blizzards, because that is misleading.
