So, I had the probe thermometer resting on top of thr paper towel and it read 92. I decided to slip it inder the hide, so that the rate of the hide was on the probe. The temp shot up to 108! Which temp should I use? I am not trying to cook the poor thing. She has a cool side of course but she likes to spend a lot of time in her hot hide because she is scared to go out.

you should tape all the probes(thermastat & thermometer) to the glass of the tank under the the paper towel right over the center of the UTH,that way you get the truest reading, but make sure you tape them down with some good masking tape dont use cheap scotch tape or anything like that:main_thumbsup:

According to some of the mroe experienced keppers they suggest a couple different probes. One under the hot hide to get a good reading of where they spend the majority of their time, one on the cooler side to make sure you have the temp gradient, and if you put 1 directly over the uth that can only tell you what temps the UTH is actually running at but IF your hot hide is directly over your uth then directly on the UTH would be needed imo. I use black electric tape to tape down my probe. Here's how it looksin my hot hide. Too hot constantly can lead to bad sheds as it turns the skin like "beef jerky" to quote my breeder (even with regular misting of his sphagnum moss and tank walls), and he was right, lowering Eros to between 89-91 and his sheds have been perfect since the temp drop.

how do you control the temp.???

You hook up your heat mat with a thermostat. Then you set the thermostat to, say, 90 degrees and it will read the temperature and turn up/down the heat mat so that the heat mat is consistently 90 degrees. You want to have the probe thermometer on that same spot to see that your thermostat is functioning correctly at all times. I hope this helped you :)

I personally use an infrared temperature gun to check temperatures. I find it very accurate and easy.
