Each city and county have their own regulations on obtaining business licenses, and it can be difficult to get one for animal breeding... especially reptiles. Hobbiests with certain numbers of 'pets' usuallu do not need a business license.
Your first place to go is your city to apply. Then you will have to file a ficticious name statement, in most cases it's simply running a 1-day ad in the classifieds of your local newspaper. Then you will need to obtain a resale permit with the state to pay your sales tax.
Your city business license department should be able to provide you with all the necessary steps!

I don't know if you have to get your business license to sell at shows...maybe in California but I know in Florida, you just need a Class III permit and need to have a ficticious name registered...atleast that's what I think...

No, you don't need a business license to sell at shows as long as it isn't more than 2 per year. You DO need a resale permit, though.

I was looking into this the other night. If I file a resale liscence in my parents name, does that mean I need to do taxes?
