I've seen alot of "This leo comes from [insert breeder's name here] line". Do you like or dislike this? It seems like the majority of the time when this is said it is a sub par version of the original breeders line. Even when it's a great example is it right to try to sell a animal using another breeder's name or should the quality of the animal speak for itself?

Just a thought feel free to give your opinions.

I like it because it lets me know the lineage..were those genes come from. I dont like it IF its being used to "sell" a particular animal.
I guess I like it as a informative phrase rather than a descriptive phrase

I think its fine. There are some breeders that I personally would not buy from so me knowing that it is off spring from those breeders lines is information that I liek to know.

I also like to know because I like to outcross within the breeders I do choose to buy from and if I only buy from 1 breeders line (even if it is 2nd hand breeding) that is less likely than if I buy from multiple lines.

I can see where some may think its a selling plug of I have these for sell from pure ABC lines etc but there is more to it than that.

Hope that makes sense.

I like it because of what everyone else said. It's informative...and I know that when we start producing our geckos, and people like them, we will feel excited that our name is worthy enough to be tagged onto our geckos.

Although some may use it as a sort of "marketing ploy", I think the majority do it to show respect to the person(s) they may have purchased an animal from and now use as breeding stock......and I certainly appreciate getting as much "accurate" information that I can about an animal I have purchased or am considering purchasing...and like Wendy suggests, it is also vital to know the lineage if you are going to be looking to outcross your animal.
And....heck....like Marcia said...."name dropping is great!!"......

Wow - you all make some great observations. What they said. I like to give credit to the people who have put years into a project to give us these great building blocks for our own imaginations. As an example, a few of us got into the Redstripes four and five years ago and have been fortunate enough to produce some really nice ones, plus incorporate them into other lines. It took Matt and Susan at HQ Reptiles at least four years to refine them to what they are, by the F5s they had some as good as any yet seen. It's just a matter of respect to acknowledge their efforts. Nowadays you can do a little shopping around and within a year voila... insane babies of all sorts. Other breeding venues (dogs, cats, fish, orchids etc.) have records of lineages which are immensely helpful to future projects, whether using names of breeders, individual specimens, lines or whatever. We use breeders' names and/or acronyms - I think it works pretty well. Some confusion does arise when a newbie produces twenty babies and coins a half dozen "new" morphs. Just my 2 cents worth.

I understand it as a acknowledgment issue. And I'm not totally sure where I stand on the issue myself. I personally tell someone where the lines originated from when asked. I don't want people looking to outcross or bring new blood into their project only to have the exact same lineage. I guess where I'm a little unsure is if it's informative or just an advertising ploy when and I'll use you as an example Dan (only because you have some truly phenomenal geckos) I'll see a $40 dollar gecko trying to be sold for $200 and then they say from Hot Geckos lines.

I ask because I kind of feel like it diminishes the hard work the breeders went through when something is being advertised as their lines and doesn't live up to it.

Does that make any sense or am I over thinking this?

If I were buying something labeled as a "snow" and the description said "from Alby's line" and the price was not inflated, then I wouldnt mind it.

But No, I agree with you. There have been many times that I have looked at an ad that shows a few subadult slightly hypo tangerines with less than a 3% carrot tail being sold as "from 5-star urban gecko sunglow parents" for $400.

Yes, I would like people to tell me the genetic history or the gecko that I am buying, but when it is just thrown in as an obvious marketing plow to sell something that is not what they say it is, I dont like that. There is a difference between freely giving information and using information to get money.

Basically everyone should treat everyone else how they would want to be treated, be honest, and know the market.

Points well taken and thank you for the compliments. You put alot of effort into these little guys and it's very gratifying to have other breeders approve when the "stars line up" and things work out. We often have to remind people that we're just carrying on what others have started, again like the Redstripes from HQ Reptiles... which originated from the stripes and jungles that Ron Tremper developed. BTW, the two Raptors from James at Okee Reps are awesome - Thank You James ! (just call me name dropper).

I understand where you are coming from and feel that name dropping is ok, but the gecko still needs to speak for itself.

"The more info the better." I agree.
